Leaders Southend were stunned 2-0 by Brentford at Griffin Park, but remain in pole position in League One after results elsewhere.

The Bees took the lead after 23 minutes through a Duncan Jupp own goal, and doubled their advantage soon after when Marcus Gayle struck (34).

Colchester missed the chance to go top when they were held to a goalless draw by managerless Walsall at home.

At the other end of the table Milton Keynes Dons remain rooted to the bottom, despite snatching a last minute 1-1 draw at Yeovil. Kevin Gall opened the scoring for the home side (71), but Ben Harding grabbed an injury time leveller.

Rotherham earned three valuable points with a 2-0 victory over Bournemouth at Millmoor. After a goalless first half, two quick goals from Martin Butler (58) and Lee Williamson (60) secured victory for The Millers.

Play off hopefuls Barnsley were denied by a late Port Vale equaliser at Oakwell. Paul Hayes (60) put The Tykes ahead, but Michael Cummins (84) netted for Port Vale to ensure it finished 1-1.

Bristol City picked up three points on their travels to move out of the relegation zone and leapfrog opponents Scunthorpe, after beating The Iron 2-0 at Glanford Park. David Cotterill (32) fired Gary Johnson's side in front, and Scott Murray's second half finish (79) settled the clash.

Huddersfield continued their quest for promotion with a narrow 1-0 win over struggling Blackpool, with the game hinging on one decisive moment late in the first half. Jason Wilcox saw red for The Seasiders for his foul inside the box, and Chris Brandon calmly tucked away the penalty (43).

Swindon were also 1-0 winners, Jamie Cureton (27) with the only goal of the game against Gillingham, who had Darren Byfield sent off towards the end.

In the day's final game, Tranmere and Hartlepool played out a goalless draw at Prenton Park.
