Roberto Martinez admitted he had mixed feelings after the draw with Fulham at the Liberty

He said after the game “There are mixed feelings because I’m delighted with the performance and the way we reacted after our own mistake with the goal – but then disappointed that we didn’t win the game.

“And it just goes to show again that sometimes performances don’t bring you the result they deserve – and it was one of those days.

“But it is a great learning curve for us and a great experience we can use.

“I look at some phases of play, the majority of possession, the chances we created and the very good goal we scored.

“They are huge positives when you consider this was against a good Premiership side at the right end of the table.

“People may be surprised the way we contained them but that is the way we have been.

“If they had seen us week-in week-out that is us, and that is why my only concern before the game was to be ourselves.

“I feel very proud of my players because of that – but at the same time you need to win games when you play like that, no matter who you play against and we didn’t do that.

“We have to be realistic when you look at their record at home that this was our best chance to go through.

“We’re not going to go there and not give it a go and try and win. But Fulham got away with it a bit here and we have to be realistic that it will be tough in the replay – but we will go there with our best intentions.

“To face a Premier League team and not be defensively-minded shows something about the confidence and belief in this team.

“It’s something we can build on for the rest of the year.”
