Swansea City Vs Plymouth Argyle Preview

Three back to back league draws have seen Swansea drop points unnecessarily but have the chance to return to winning ways.

Substitute Lewis Mcgugan's 76th minute header was enough to earn Nottingham Forest a draw against Roberto Martinez's side last weekend but with the visit of 17th placed Plymouth Argyle the Swans have the perfect opportunity to finally move into the play-off places. As the fight for points reaches fever pitch, the margin for error is growing ever thinner, but Martinez has asked his players to go out and challenge for every point as he told the WM, he said “ Every game is a final for us now so the Plymouth game couldn’t be more important, the games we have left at home are vital for us.”

He added “Every point between now and the end of the season is equally important and we have 30 to challenge for. The target is still between 72 and 75 points and the key to reaching it is our home form – there’s no margin for error at home now.” All that stands in the South Wales club's way of reaching that lofty target are what has been described by Swansea midfielder Mark Gower as “10 cup finals” and should the Spaniards target be met here is every reason to be optimistic of a play-off place.

Predicting a wholly different test against Swansea, Pilgrims midfielder Jamie Mackie believes that the solid framework that the Devon side have shown away from home will stand them in good stead tomorrow evening as he told the Plymouth Herald, “Swansea will be a different test to Reading. They play a lot of football and have got some very good players. Jason Scotland scores a lot of goals for them, but we have been solid away from home. We will go there and be solid again, work from that platform and see what we can get."

The Injury List:

Swansea: Captain Garry Monk could be sidelined with a back injury that has seen the 29 year old sidelined for the last two weeks. The Swans only have two major injury woes with Ferrie Bodde and Marcos Painter both sidelined.

Plymouth: The Pilgrims could be without left back Chris Barker who missed the 2-2 draw with Reading for non football reasons. Whilst defender Craig Cathcart who is struggling with a groin injury and club top goalscorer and Blackburn loanee Paul Gallagher is a doubt after picking up a hamstring problem.

More team news to come.....

Players To Watch:

Jordi Gomez: The Spaniard has just got better and better and better since his £200,000 loan move from Espanyol in the summer and with his creative flair, pace, poise on the ball and visionary passing there can be no doubt over the top flight class the 24 year old possesses.

Jason Scotland: As goal scoring droughts go the 29 year old's certainly did not last for long after his close range strike against Forest on Saturday. In a quite game for the Trinidad and Tobago forward Scotland was substituted in the second half at the City Ground in readiness for the challenges posed by Plymouth. Finding his feet in the championship the Morvant born striker has sent a clear signal that he is more than capable of causing any defence in the second tier of the British game problems.

Rory Fallon: No stranger to the Liberty Stadium the New Zealander's time at Swansea was a turbulent one. Signing from Swindon Town for £300,000 a then club record transfer fee, the weight of expectation laid heavily on the Kiwi's shoulders. Initially the 26 year old struggled to end his goal drought at the club that so blighted his early Swansea career. It was not only the lack of goals that the former Yeovil Town man had to contend with but the ever present murmurs of discontent from the terraces. Despite his best efforts, Fallon was told he was surplus to requirements and when a £300,000 bid came in from Plymouth Argyle, the striker made his move to Devon. During his time at Home Park he has netted 14 goals and is only 20 games off of making 100 appearances for the Pilgrims.

Jamie Mackie: Born in Dorking, the midfielder stunned the Home Park faithful last weekend with a thunderous 25 yard strike to hand Argyle a 2-1 lead against Reading on Saturday only to be denied all three points after the Royal's levelled. Since his arrival from Exeter City in the summer many Greens fans have applauded the 23 year old for his work rate and effort and show the kind of form shown against Reading Swansea could be undone.
