Dorus De Vries will not be heading to the World Cup this summer after Holland announced their training squad

The Swansea City goalkeeper was hopeful of a place in the squad after his manager sent a DVD of him in action to the Dutch coach but - as widely predicted - he has missed out on the original 26 man training squad.

Speaking after his exclusion, De Vries told the Western Mail  “The coach made up his mind over the last year and a half and I don’t think he was going to change it.

“Maybe if there are a couple of injuries I could be back in with a shout.

“I feel I made progression this season and I am still learning every day.

“It makes me proud to have 24 clean sheets in a season, it’s a great achievement.

“I’ve grown a lot over the last few years.

“I’ve got my own ambitions as well, I want to keep on growing and I want to keep on performing.

“The team has done well and some individuals have had great seasons,” added de Vries. “A lot of contracts are also expiring next year.

“So it is just down to the club if something is going to happen, but you never know in football.

“Football is an opportunistic world, many of the players have been playing consistently well this season.

“So I would not be surprised if there is a lot of interest in the summer and we will just have to wait and see what happens.

“It’s the same with the gaffer as well. Last year we had a great season and almost got us to the play-offs and Roberto Martinez left.

“So you never know in football.”
