It’s all musical chairs in the boardroom
It’s all musical chairs in the boardroom

I was waiting with baited breath to hear what today’s press release was going to be, but when the news emerged it left me feeling distinctly underwhelmed.

When I heard that an announcement was to be made at Elland Road this morning I got myself all excited. I dared to start hoping that it was going to be something important, like a new investor prepared to pump millions of pounds into the club. I thought that the million pounds that had suddenly become available to sign Luke Murphy was an indication that they’d found someone else to boost the funds available to the club.

All that is happening is that three of the senior figures at the club are moving into different positions. We can all be thankful that Ken Bates spell as chairman came to an end last night (as agreed at the time of the takeover) and Salah Nooruddin will take over that role.

Apart from that, the good news is that Shaun Harvey will no longer be running the club on a day to day basis, but the bad news is that he will "remain as a director of the club to offer us his considerable footballing experience." Harvey is widely reviled for his part in the Bates regime, but I don’t think he’s that bad. I’ve just got him down as a sycophantic yes-man, who felt he had to carry our Bates’ autocratic orders in order to keep his job.

So David Haigh moves to replace Harvey, becoming the managing director. He told the BBC "We are at a time in the development of the club when we have to balance immediate ambition against our long term strategy for success.  We have an excellent manager in Brian McDermott and I am confident that by working as a team we can achieve our aims." Although a bit of extra cash might help him as well.

And Nooruddin said "David Haigh and I will continue to work with the rest of the board, the management team, Brian McDermott and his team to build the foundations on and off the pitch of a successful future for Leeds United. “  Which is nice, but I look forward to the day when they’ve got something truly exciting to announce, rather than just the news that three of the senior bodies at the club are being shuffled round into different jobs.
