Luke Murphy whoah...he cost one million pounds, he'll keep the ball on the ground!

It finally feels summer has arrived today as Leeds announced their first one million pound signing since Richard Cresswell in 2005. Brian McDermott beat off stiff competition from Blackburn and Wolves to bring in Luke Murphy from Crewe.

We all feared the worst late last week, McDermott's gloomy prognosis that there was nothing to spend and the Leeds boss putting a brave face on it amidst rumours he could be prepared to quit.

However has a ray of sunshine finally emerged in the form of Luke Murphy? This time last week Leeds signing a young, up and coming player for a seven figure price tag seemed as unlikely as Serena Williams being knocked-out of Wimbledon.

But today both unlikely stories happened. For Leeds fans, to finally sign a player on the up who was wanted by two other clubs rather than the has-been, 30 something journeyman who can't get into another Championship side, is a rare joy to behold.

Brian McDermott was clearly delighted to land his target, he told the official Leeds United website "I feel he was the best player in his division last year,"

"Luke certainly fits the profile of player that we're looking to attract - he is young, hungry, wants to work hard and very obviously talented.

"I'd like to thank the owners for making this deal happen. We had spoken about Luke earlier in the summer being one for the key signings we're looking to make."

Murphy claimed he was joining a club "on the up."

So what do we know about Murphy. He was born in Alsager on 21st October 1989 ironically on the same day as we beat Wolves 1-0 at Elland Road courtesy of a Bobby Davidon goal. He made his debut for Crewe in 2008 against Swindon. Having played wide-right, he switched to central midfield forming a partnership with Aston Villa bound Ashley Westwood coming to prominence during 2011/12 as the Railwaymen were promoted into League One.

Murphy became Crewe skipper last season, winning player of the year, creating 12 assists and scoring nine times. He also led Alex to the Johnstones Paint Trophy.

So the feelgood factor is back at Elland Road, but for how long? Most fans will be now wondering if the next move will be another incoming one or a departure to help balance up the books?
