Swans Pay The Penalty At Tottenham
Sunday, 25th Aug 2013 22:46

It's two Premier League defeats from two for the Swans as a single Roberto Soldado penalty was enough to see them beaten again at White Hart Lane in what was a disappointing overall performance.

Soldado's goal was the least that Spurs deserved after they dominated the Swans for large periods of the game and only the brilliance of Michel Vorm - particularly in the first half - kept an air of respectability about the scoreline as Spurs took their own tally for the season to a maximum six points from six.

The Swans did react well to going a goal down and started to threaten much more in the Tottenham half of the pitch but you have to wonder why it took the home side to take the lead for that to happen and whether things would have been any different had we come out with that mentality. In two previous seasons in the Premier League we seem to have a mindset around away games that we go and play for a point yet when we have gone and taken the game by the scruff of the neck before now we have often come away with a surprise result such as Arsenal away last season.

For long periods of the first half we sat too deep and when we did get the ball we surrendered it too cheaply giving Spurs all the momentum and consequently all the decent attacking play that was happening. Soldado was a constant threat but it was the pace of the home side that caused the Swans the most problems as they struggled to contain a side that will shortly be adjusting to permanent life without Gareth Bale.

Vorm was called upon early to deal with a couple of long range efforts that he dealt with well and comfortably but it was the warning signs that the Swans should have heeded as it set the tone of play for large periods of the first half. The width of the crossbar helped them when Ashley Williams header came back off the bar whilst the rebound was brilliantly saved between Williams and Vorm to keep the score at nil nil despite the clear advantage built up by the home side.

We were not helped by the referee at times who was all too keen to blow his whistle at the slightest contact on a Spurs player but similar challenges on Swansea players passed without the award of a free kick much to the annoyance of the travelling fans. Talking of annoying fans mind the slow version of 'Spurs go marching in' must get an award for the most annoying football chant of all time that also makes it sound as if the hundreds of cockney voices signing it are as bored of it as the rest of us by the time they get into full flow.

Back to the game and the Swans tried to show the occasional flash of what they are capable of but as mentioned earlier the ball was being given away too easily by too many players and it was probably a relief when the half time whistle went with the game level.

Could Michael Laudrup change that pattern at half time? The early answer in the second half was no and it was Spurs who continued to make the running at the start of the second half although it took a penalty in the end to separate the two sides. Shelvey's challenge was deemed to be a foul and up stepped Soldado to score from the spot for the second Sunday in succession to give the home side the lead.

Pozuelo - and shortly afterwards Bony - were introduced to the side and all of a sudden the Swans had a purpose. Pozuelo is worthy of a start next Sunday if you ask me and with him and Bony on the field it bought other players into the game more effectively most noticeably Pablo Hernandez who up to that point was in the middle of one of his frustrating games.

The Swans were starting to pose an attacking threat although ironically it was Chico Flores who came the closest to score when he met a left wing cross with perfect timing to volley the ball that was tipped over by the keeper. Had it been half an inch either side of him it would have been in and a contender for goal of the season such was the touch of the defender.

That was as close as the Swans came although they should take heart from their last 25 minutes where they more than matched Spurs but it is incredibly frustrating to need to be a goal down before we step up a gear, maybe another lesson to learn for the future.

I guess when the fixtures came out back in June we would probably have predicted we would lose the opening two games so definitely no need to panic but it would be nice to pick something up next week as I wouldn't want to see the players confidence too dented by three league defeats to start a season.

We move on.
