Jan Poortvliet could lead FC Eindhoven to the Dutch Eredivisie

FC Eindhoven havent played in the top flight of Dutch football since a two year spell ended in 1977, many may not have heard of the second club in Eindhoven having been in the shadow of their illustrious neighbours PSV for a long time, however the Blauw-witten as they are known areactually the oldest club in the city and some would say the peoples Club, winning the Dutch League in the 1950's and becoming founder members of the Eredivisie.

Since that relegation in 1977, times have often been bad for the Club indeed in their centenary year of 2009 for long periods it looked like the club may go out of existence.

However this season things looked up after the arrival of a new manager, Jan Poortvliet no less, with a target of survival and no more (Sounds familiar) Poortvliet has surprised everyone by taking them to the play offs and a comfortable mid table position (Play off spots are awarded in 12 game sections as well as league position).

Now he has guided them through the first stages of the play offs and tonight (Thursday) they entertain Willem II in the first leg of the play off semi final, meaning that they are just three games away from a return to the top flight.

The return leg will be on Sunday afternoon, so fingers crossed for FC Eindhoven tonight and at the weekend.
