St Mary's Gas Holders Could Be Knocked Down Wednesday, 18th Jun 2014 08:58 They have dominated the skyline of Northam since the early 20th Century , but now they could be knocked down. Southern Gas Network have plans to knock down the holders saying that they are now becoming obsolete in gas storage, however their plans are subject to approval by Southampton City Council who have "local listed status" registered on the holders, whilst this isnt the same as the English heritage's listed building status, it does mean the council has the power to stop any plans for demolition unless whatever is replacing them is considered to be of "equal or greater quality" of what is being replaced. In March 2013 SGN submitted plans to demolish the holders but were rebuffed as their application did not include enough information about what would replace them. These plans will increase speculation that Saints might be about to purchase the land in order to further expand St Mary's, a year or so ago architects drawings of what St Mary's could look like surfaced and the Gas Holders didnt appear to be in them. Certainly Saints could benefit financially if the area was revamped especially if the wharf opposite the Itchen Stand was turned into an entertainment area, rejuvenating this part of the city and in the process turning St Mary's into a stadium that could be in constant use. Certainly with the Stadium lay out the Gas Holders would not be crucial to expansion plans, but the land could be useful in developing St Mary's Stadium into a more multi purpose part of the City with bars and restaurants that could help the club make money Photo: Action Images Please report offensive, libellous or inappropriate posts by using the links provided.
