Saints Linked With Athletico Madrid Defender
Monday, 25th Aug 2014 15:08

Despite the fact that Ronald Koeman has stated that he isn't in the market for another defender, the club is being linked with one from Athletico Madrid.

Saints are being linked with Athletico Madrid and Belgium International defender Toby Alderweireld, the 25 year old who although primarily a central defender can also operate at right back is keen to play regularly which is why he would not be adverse to a move away from the Spanish club whom he only made 12 league appearances for last season.

He has plenty of experience though and made 128 appearances for Ajax as well as 37 for the Belgium side whom he represented in this years World Cup.

The likes of Arsenal are being linked with him but the key for the player himself is moving to a club where he can play games rather than sit on the bench and that could push the ball into Saints favour.

He joined Athletico for around £6 million so he could be signed for a reasonable price without taking too much out of the kitty.

on paper would seem like a good buy, good pedigree, good age, playing at the highest level and hopefully a reasonable price.
There is no doubt we need this sort of player as cover in the defence. Fonte is playing his best football at the moment, but he needs competition and back up should he become injured.
I'm not too concerned about pace up front as I think we have that in Sam McQueen and Lloyd Isgrove. But If big Ron insists then bringing in a winger will be fine by me, Redmond or Townsend will do nicely at the right price mind. Therefore Redmond preferably as Townsend is being priced out of the market, because Spurs want Morgan and we need to keep him.
