Saints At Sheffield United The Preview

Saints travel to South Yorkshire looking to end a wretched run of form and propel themselves into the Capital One Cup Semi Finals

Ronald Koeman has the task of freshening up his shell shocked side and turning the poor form of the last few weeks on its head. The problem is though he has to o it without top scorer Pelle and several other key players, however this could work in our favour.

Sometimes things happen by design and sometimes fate takes a hand and hopefully this will be one of those occasions, Ronald Koeman has stated that his side will not change style without Pellet, but the reality is that we will have to adapt to some degree and the choice s whether to play Shane Long or Sadio Mane up top.

Either will offer an option, Mane will offer pace, as will Long but perhaps the Irishman wily offer that little bit more and this could push the ball into his court when Koeman makes his decision.

But whatever change the manager makes it will go some way to freshening up a side who have looked a little lacking in something in the last few games as well as having a lot of bad luck.

With respect to the Blades we should have enough even with our injury ravaged side to b able to go through this evening and this game offers us a great chance to do something this season and we need to take it, the reality is Saints haven't played that badly in recent weeks they have just lapsed in concentration at key monuments, if we can erase that then we can march on to the semis.

Saints will b roared on by over 4,000 fans for this game, a great turnout for a cold Tuesday night in Yorkshire, hopefully the players will respond and realise that this season is at a crossroads, it needs o be kick started back to life and his I just the game to do that.

Less than 3 hours and then off we go, heading north.
I'm sure that the 4000+ Saints fans will roar us on to victory tonight - whatever side we manage to field.
We could welcome Morgan back and hopefully one of our front players will step up to the mark tonight.
Forster, Clyne, Targett, Jose, Toby,
Vic, Davis, Morgan, Tadic, JWP
Long
Subs : Mane, Gardos, Bertrand, Yoshida, Kelvin, Gallagher/Mayuka, Reed/Hesketh

Lets cheers the lads on to a 2 legged semi against either Bournemouth or Tottenham

i know this is a league 1 team, but am bit worried about this game...bad run of form, no striker, and a tough home side. Really hope we pull it off though.

Like it or not this is a must-win game. A loss tonight would leave our already battered confidence in tatters. We have got into a non-winning rut. We can't score goals and the few defensive frailties we do have are, without Morgan, being exposed. We are in danger of going on a big slide. From what I've seen, Mane doesn't look as though he'll make the grade here but I thought that about Pelle until he scored at Millwall. Playing Mane against weaker opposition might give him a much-needed boost however, I'd start with Long to rough them up a bit - or even Long with Mane and tell Mane to stay on his feet unless he's genuinely fouled.

A game we should win and will give Mane and Long a chance to prove themselves. If they can't score in this, how do they expect to score in the Prem?
RoKo, I think, has taken a page from Jose's book and had Pelle take a strategic yellow. Taking him out of this gives him time to rest, doesn't risk injury, and has him ready for Prem games with a clean sheet so he can't get banned for one of the important games coming up.

Definite banana skin game now. Looking forward to a positive display and to get off on the front foot. May be a bit of a shaky start for us as Sheffield fancy their chances tonight I'd say. Need to stay firm and not get shaky at the back!

C'mon Saints!!

Dispatches from wet and bleak Sheffield: A city with the elegant charm of Basingstoke shopping mall, the quiet sophistication of a Saturday night pub crawl in Portsmouth and as welcoming as an unannounced visit from the VAT inspector. Of the football perhaps the least said the better. The difference between the teams can be summed up in one word - desire. They wanted a result so much more than Saints. From the hopeless back passes to the abysmal finishing this looked like a team which would have preferred to have been almost anywhere else but Yorkshire. Extra training and a long session on the naughty step before next weekend!
