It doesn't have to be spectacular for Awford
It doesn't have to be spectacular for Awford

Suddenly the next game brings a feeling of optimism not dread - such is the speed at which Pompey have turned a winless run into one in which they are unstoppable.

Three wins - the latest by 6-2 at Cambridge - and two draws in their last five have got the Blues and their fans looking up not down and they welcome Tranmere to Fratton Park on Tuesday evening in confident but not complacent mood.

Andy Awford says the players need to keep their feet on the ground after the goal rush at Cambridge and insists another 1-0 home win would be just as welcome as another feast in front of goal.

He told the club website: 'It was a fantastic performance from the whole team and to score six goals away from home is great. But now we have to get our feet back in the floor and prepare for a really tough game on Tuesday.

'It was wonderful to enjoy the winning feeling on Saturday night, but then our focus immediately turned to facing Tranmere. They’ve just beaten a Shrewsbury team who were on top of the league, so we know it won’t be easy.

'That result will have given them a bit of a lift and they’ll be coming here in confident mood. But if we can go on a run then it’s a fact that we will climb the table and the longer we go unbeaten, the higher we’re going to go.'

There are no new injury concerns for Awford, who is set to stick with a winning line-up.
