Saints Fans Need To Grit Teeth And Roar On The Big Clubs In The FA Cup
Monday, 9th Mar 2015 15:57

Saints fans won't like to hear this but in terms of what is best for Saints we cannot cheer on the underdogs in the FA Cup.

Ideally this years FA Cup would be won by one of the underdogs, Bradford or Villa would be acceptable although not so much Reading.

But what we would be praying against would be Manchester United, Arsenal or Liverpool winning it, a big cherr would usually be heard in the Southampton area when one of them goes out of a cup competition.

But Saints fans need to swallow their pride and pray for Liverpool, United or Arsenal to win the FA Cup this year as it would guarantee Saints a place in the Europa League if they can hang on to 7th spot in the Premier.

Unlike previous years the Europa League place will not revert to the runners up as it did in 2003 when we benefited from the rule as it was then, now if the winner is a club who have already qualified for the Champions League or who dont need it because they have qualified for the Europa League through the league then the third Europa League place as it does in the Capital One Cup will revert back to the Premier meaning that 7th place will be enough, barring a complete collapse by one of those three teams currently above us in league form.

So Saints fans have to grit their teeth and want one of those three to triumph at Wembley and as it currently stands it doesnt matter which one.

From most fans points of view I think most would prefer Arsenal to win the FA Cup and do the deed for us, after that it would probably be usually Liverpool ahead of United, but for many they would not be able to contemplate our former trio at Anfield winning something so they would prefer United for this season only I suspect.

ideally the final will be contested by one of these three clubs as that would possibly afford us the luxury of knowing that we will be in the Europa league before the end of the season.

Alternatively, you could hope for what I am hoping - that a smaller club wins the FA Cup (hopefully Bradford!) and we finish 6th or above which is achievable if we return to our best form :)

I still think that we will finish above United.. They have to collapse soon, they have been awful this season.
