Pompey don't find it much of a trial at Woking
Pompey don't find it much of a trial at Woking

Goals by Gareth Evans and Matt Clarke boosted their hopes of getting a Fratton contract - and earned Pompey their third straight pre-season win at Woking on Friday night.

There was good news for the Blues fans who made the short trip up the A3 when Gary Roberts was named in the starting line-up - having recovered quickly from what had looked like a potentially-serious injury picked up at Bognor a week ago.

Roberts and Conor Chaplin both had chances and Pompey were good value for the lead given to them just before the half-hour when Evans fired in after Kai Naismith found him in a good position.

The lead was doubled five minutes later when Matt Clar - like Evans, still only a trialist - headed in Evans' corner.

At that stage it seemed a question of how many would win by but in fact they did not ass to their tally. That said, they played some entertaining football and contained Woking, of the Conference national division, quite comfortably.

Pompey fielded a number of other trial players, incluing goalkeeper Brian Murphy, and defenders Frank van der Struijk and Ben Davies.

Pompey: Murphy; van der Struijk (Davies 46), Burgess (Webster 82), Clarke, Stevens; Atangana, Doyle (c); Evans, Roberts, Naismith (Close 73); Chaplin (Haunstrup 82). Subs not used: Jones, Robinson, Hollands
