Saints Need Liverpool To Take Their Eye Off The Ball
Friday, 6th May 2016 09:14

After their win last night Liverpool face Sevilla in the final of the Europa League with a place in the Champions League up for grabs, but will they take their eye off the ball in the Premier League and let Saints surge ahead of them.

This is a key weekend for Saints in the Premier League, firstly they need to do their own business and beat Spurs up at White Hart Lane, the only Premier League team Ronald Koeman has yet to beat as Saints manager, then they need to look elsewhere.

On the face of it Liverpool should despatch Watford with ease at Anfield, but how much will a dramatic European night of action have taken out of them, there is a feeling that they do not have the squad to challenge on both Premier League and Europa League fronts and that squad is ravaged by injury, suspension and discontent.

With all of that it's a marvel that Jurgen Klopp has got them to win a game, but now he has to focus on the main prize and that is the Europa League.

If Saints can finish above Liverpool in 7th then that position will be enough to secure a Europa League place next season if Manchester United win the FA Cup.

Liverpool have played weakened sides after Europa League games recently, at Bournemouth where they won and at Swansea where they lost, the games now come thick and fast for the Reds, after Watford they have a home game against Chelsea next Wednesday followed by a trip to West Brom on the final day of the season.

The issue for their trip to the Hawthorns will be that only three days later they travel to Basel to take on Sevilla in the Europa League final on Wednesday 18th May, the chances of them putting out anything near a full side at the Hawthorns are remote.

But first Saints have to do their bit and if they win at Spurs that will be a giant leap forward towards European qualification and we will also get a feeling if 6th is attainable or not.

But it is one step at a time for Saints, if we finish above Liverpool then the Europa League final result is irrelevant to us, if the Scousers finish above us then we will need them to win (alongside MUFC in the FA Cup) to push that final Europa League to the 8th spot.
