Colin Webster will hopefully have recovered from his 'will he won't he' penalty incident at Wolves on Saturday in time to take charge of QPR's cup replay at Burnley on Tuesday.

It seems to be all the rage at the moment for a referee to change his mind about a penalty decisions. Don’t argue, it’s not worth it, they never change their mind – well actually it seems they do. Steve Bennett did at Hull last week and then on Saturday at Wolves Colin Webster did the same thing. On both occasions the referee believed he had seen a handball only to be overruled by his linesmen. At Hull they got the decision right, on Saturday I am not sure they did because Jon Parkin did seem to handle the ball to me.



Anyway Mr Webster is back in action on Tuesday night as QPR visit Burnley. So far this season he has shown 39 yellows and three reds in 23 games. His biggest haul was six yellows in the Sheff Utd v Charlton Championship game over Christmas. One of his red cards was harshly given to Brentford keeper Ben Hamer in their surprise FA Cup defeat at Barrow in the previous round – let’s hope for another cup upset on Tuesday, a QPR win! His last Burnley game was a 2-2 draw with Cardiff at Turf Moor in December when our own Wayne Routledge scored, although of course he is ineligible for this game. Last season he showed 76 yellows and two reds in 38 games.



You have to look right back to the 2005/06 season for Webster’s last QPR game – when Ian Holloway was in charge. Webster refereed our 2-1 win at Leicester City when Paul Furlong bagged a late winner after Alan Maybury had been sent off for the hosts. Furlong was later sent off for Rangers and in all Webster showed eight yellows and two reds that day. His mark of four saw him finish 25th in the referee league that season.

A dodgy decision to Leicester was met with howls of derision from QPR so he promptly awarded the next fifty fifty call against Leicester. Instead of just judging everything on its merits he was constantly trying to rectify an earlier poor decision and the result was disorganised chaos for long periods. He has only refereed QPR away games in his time, including the 6-1 demolition at Leeds and wins at Chesterfield and Bury as well as a draw at Northampton. Overall in QPR games the R’s have won three, drawn one and lost one which is not bad at all considering how we normally do away from home. In that time QPR have had eight booked and two sent off, Furlong and Danny Shittu at Chesterfield, while our opponents have been given seven yellows and one red. The majority of those cards did come in the Leicester match.



Despite his card happy appearance with QPR at The Walkers Stadium Webster tends to be a pretty reasonable official from what I have seen of him – not often prone to flashing the cards. His career is starting to wind down now so he has the benefit of many years of experience and that often shows with good dollops of common sense in his performances. Famous last words.
