Pompey players don't really know this feeling...

Christian Burgess reflected on Pompey's rise to third place in League Two and admitted it was a new feeling for the squad.

They reached that sought-after spot in the automatic promotion zone with a 2-0 win at Crawley, courtesy of Burgess's header and a fine finish by Kyle Bennett.

Now the question is whether they can stay there with 11 big games to go.

Burgess told the Pompey website: 'It was a good reaction from the lads and we deserved the win. We played some good football in the first half and looked dangerous. We came out and showed what we’re all about.

'There was no need to panic. We’ve been 0-0 at half-time on a few occasions this season and just had to keep believing. If anything we were a bit open at the start of the second half, but we gradually got a bit of control.

'I had a little feeling when he missed the penalty that we’d score from the corner. I just attacked it and luckily Naisy’s put it straight on my head. It’s another clean sheet, which is great — it’s what we look for at the back. Now we’ll try to build on those three points.

'We’ve often been chasing (the top three teams), so we don’t really know what it’s like. But there’s a long way to go with lots of twists and turns.'

Pompey head to Colchester on Saturday and entertain Grimsby next Tuesday.
