Bad news for the QPR fans hoping to support the team in Cardiff at the end of August - the Bank Holiday engineering works have struck on the trains that day.

By Car:

Take the M4 from London all the way into South Wales. Leave the M4 at junction 33 and take the A4232 towards Cardiff/Barry. Leave the dual carriageway at the B4267 exit, signposted Cardiff Leckwith Athletics Stadium. Ninian Park and the new stadium both appear on the right. It is about 150 miles from Loftus Road.

This part of Cardiff used to be swimming in parking spaces prior to the construction of the new stadium and adjoining retail park. The retail park limits cars to 90 minute stays and is strictly policed, surrounding roads have residents only schemes operating on Saturdays and although there is a small pen for about 200 cars next to the away end this is likely to be mostly filled by the five coaches making the trip. You may find yourself heading further afield looking for street parking.

By Train

Bad news kids. What is usually a direct service on GWR from Paddington to Cardiff Central has been turned into a right ballache by engineering works which mean a bus replacement service running between Newport and Cardiff (40 minutes). Trains leave Paddington at 12 minutes past the hour and the cheapest of those in the morning is £33.50 at 10.12 getting in at 13.21. Cheaper coming back — 17.20 (bit of a push), 18.25 and 19.09 arriving 20.15, 21.21 and 22.26 respectively are all currently £18.

The new stadium is just about walkable from the main train station. Cross the bus station in front of the main entrance to the main road, turn left and walk across the river and then basically follow that road all the way down as it becomes Ninian Park Road and bends round to the left and meets a big steel railway bridge. Go under the bridge and the ground is right there.

Pubs: The guide recommends the Lansdowne and The Cornwall Hotel round the ground but I've never had the pleasure myself so I wouldn't be comfortable recommending them personally in a place where it can get a bit tasty when QPR visit.

There's a massive Weatherspoons set in an old theatre by the station called the Prince of Wales. It’s standard Wethersoons stuff in there (absolutely filthy, disgusting food, but cheap drinks) and there's plenty of room. Most of the pubs round the station in the centre of town seem ok.
