One or two winners last week so it may be worth your while investing in the pundits' advice as QPR travel to Wolves amidst a weekend of sporting action.

One non-runner returned a tenner for Brian last week but a £40 loss still spells trouble, he is now £76.38 in the red. The Challenger account was finally back on form last week with QPR’s defeat at Burnley netting £36 and a draw double between Villa and Everton and Stoke and Newcastle yielded £104.63 to push the account balance back into the black by £36.04.

The only return last week was the £10 from another non runner on the horses. This week we travel to Wolves and I think we can get a result as by all accounts Wolves have been poor recently and with the expectant crowd if we don’t concede early they could turn on their lads as patience is not a big thing in the Midlands. I will have a tenner on us to win the game and a fiver on Wayne Routledge to get the first goal and will have a couple of quid on the correct score of 3-1.

The World Snooker Championship starts on Saturday and Ronnie O’Sullivan is the favourite. However he has his problems outside the game you are never 100% sure of which Ronnie will turn up. I am going to look elsewhere and will have back Stephen McGuire available at 8/1.

The Scottish Grand National takes place on Saturday and it reminds me of one of the funniest things I have seen. On the day of the 2000 race we played Crewe away and after the game we went into a local bookies and one of our party Ted, nicknamed Trigger and you will see why, asked what we fancied in the race about to be shown on the screen. Trigg, who was a bit worse for several bottles of beer, failed to see the caption in the top left hand corner of the screen saying replay. One of the lads Casper then told him we had a good bet on Paris Pike. The locals were bewildered by a drunk Londoner going mental cheering on a horse for a race that took place 2 hours previously and with the result on the text screens next to the TV. Other Trigger classics include telling someone that the score in the Rugby was 25-47 when in fact he was reading the clock in the corner of the screen, failing to place the remains of the kitty (about 15 quid) on the correct score of 3-1 to us when we played Pompey in the last game of the season and the look of horror on his face when Gallen scored in the last minute to make it 3-1 and his electric blue jacket that earned him the nickname in the first place.

It’s not always easy to put your money where your mouth is but it paid dividends for me last weekend. I scooped the best part of £200 on my £50 emotional insurance bet – Hull FC and QPR to both lose. Most of that went in the bank although I left a little in the online account to play with and I followed my own advice from last week by backing Villa and Everton to draw which they promptly did in a 3-3 thriller – haven’t there been some great matches this week by the way?! Funds withdrawn again I decided to have a bit of pocket money on Stephen Ireland for the first goal against Fulham and he he did the business to at 10/1. So the best part of £300 pocketed last week and with Hull FC abject once again this evening and QPR going to Wolves tomorrow emotional insurance looks like being the order of the day again. The return to picking doubles got me back on track in this column last week too so I’ll stick to that this week.
