Southampton ! Southampton ! A Song For The City
Wednesday, 20th Sep 2017 16:30

Southampton does not have many songs written about it, so when one is it deserves a mention, listen to it here and find out how to hear it live for free ahead of Saturday's game.

Dan O'Farrell was once the frontman of Southampton Indie legends Accrington Stanley, now he is the main man in Dan O'Farrell & the Difference Engine.

On Saturday though he will be doing a solo in store gig at Vinilo Record Store in Queensway where he will be playing songs like "Southampton Southampton" as well as "Your facebook feed is not the world" come and find out why he doesn't do cover versions on Saturday lunchtime at 1.30pm before heading along with Dan to St Mary's.

Why is it that when anyone in Southampton tries to do anything creative that a large percentage of the population just slag it off, as my mum used to say, if you cant say anything good dont say anything at all

Well said Nick. Its nice song showing some pride yet some moron has to slag it off already but he could be from pompey which is basically the same thing but worse.

"Hear it for free" you mean he won't pay us to listen?

On a more up beat note: Nick in the last podcast they were talking about how the Saints should adopt the Skids "The Saints Are Coming" to be played at the start of games to rev up the crowd and the players instead of what they play now and were talking of getting up a petition to send the club----any word on that?

I trust some of the previous contributors will be submitting an effort themselves.
Too many doubting and one track Simon Cowell's haunt this earth I'm afraid.
I am sure a live second listen pre match should be worthwhile, as I think Dan's work seems reflective and thoughtful. This will doubtless contribute more colour to the Southampton culture canvas .
On the separate subject of songs at St Mary's -whether from the clubs own PA or the Northam (and satellites) choral section -I like the idea of adding a final touch to Ray Davies perfection with 'Dedicated Follower of Southampton' and hearing the Skids again.
Also worthy of plagiarism is Guy Mark's 'Loving You Has Made Me Bananas' (honestly, google it -it fits!) and the excellent local ska band The Skore's recording, also called 'Southampton, Southampton.' A new audience awaits the reggae (Tommy McCook and the Supersonics) and trad jazz versions of 'Oh when the Saints' too!
We should take a leaf out of Saturday's visiting Red Army's book too, where I believe they still add to their vast repertoire by trying out new songs in designated singing pubs (in Manchester too!). The last time I recall anything similar down here in St Mary's days was pre match in the Oddfellows Arms -happy days. This used to happen in Northam Social too, I believe. Anyone knowing where this tradition carries on, and I will gladly take my foghorn? Up The Saints.

If anyone is interested, Pink Floyd did a song called "Southampton Dock"many years ago but it isn't very cheerful as its about a young woman waving off soldiers going to the Falklands war!
