Cerny signs new deal, R’s beaten in Chelsea friendly – evening news
Tuesday, 4th Aug 2009 22:10

Czech goalkeeper Radek Cerny has signed a one year extension to his current contract taking him through to 2011. Meanwhile a QPR XI was beaten 4-0 by Chelsea today.

Cerny endured a tough start to his QPR career and was shamefully abused by the Loftus Road faithful during his first senior match for the club against Barnsley a year ago to the day. A gaffe on defeat at Sheff Utd a week later and his reign looked like it was going to be a short one. However the 35 year old won the supporters round with some solid displays and ended the season with the division’s Golden Glove award after keeping 19 clean sheets. Despite his age, and still having 12 months left to run on the deal he signed last summer when he arrived on a free transfer after three years with Spurs, the club has moved quickly to sign him up for the next two seasons.

Cerny was expected to return to training today after a bout of Swine Flue and should make the starting eleven against Blackpool on Saturday. If he does not there is as yet no official word on Andy Marshall’s contract although it has been widely reported that the former Coventry stopper will be penning a one year deal at Loftus Road this week. Cerny's compatriot Martin Lejsal, who trialled with QPR earlier this summer, today signed for Dutch side Heerenveen.

Elsewhere today a QPR side containing Gareth Ainsworth was beaten 4-0 by Chelsea in a behind closed doors game at the Premiership side’s Cobham training facility. Sadly the full QPR team is not known at this point but Chelsea included a number of first team stars including Michael Ballack, Daniel Sturridge and Salomon Kalou, and former QPR loan stars Michael Mancienne and Scott Sinclair. The Blues ran out comfortable winners thanks to second half goals from Jacob Mellis, Salomon Kalou, Fabio Borini and Jeffrey Bruma.

In former QPR news Nikki Bull has joined our near neighbours Brentford as they prepare for life back in League One. Bull was a star man in the Conference with Aldershot, winning the non-league player of the year award and the club’s player of the season trophy several times, but lost his place to Mikhael Jaimez-Ruiz last season and asked to leave the League Two side this summer. At the other end of the career spectrum is Paul Furlong who after a summer of indecision has finally decided to carry on playing and commit himself to Barnet for another year. Furs, an absolute legend down at Loftus Road, scored nine goals in 21 appearances at the end of last season passing 200 career strikes in the process.

Elsewhere in the Championship today Ian Holloway entered the transfer market seriously for the first time since joining Blackpool. A meeting last week with Latvian board member Valeri Belokon saw Holloway plead for funds to strengthen his team, with QPR up first on Saturday. That wish was granted and today they splashed out £500k on Scot Charlie Adam from Rangers. Plymouth have today themselves agreed a fee with rangers for midfielder Alan Gow who impressed for Blackpool on loan last season. Cardiff’s Paul Parry has completed his move to Preston, former Man Utd winger Quinton Fortune has joined Doncaster Rovers and problem child Michael McIndoe is on the move again – joining Coventry from Bristol City.
