Swansea City : Hellberg dilemma not just a football thing
Thursday, 13th Nov 2025 09:57 by Keith Haynes

Kim Hellberg is very prominent in Swansea City news this week, in fact he has been for some months, even when Alan Sheehan had the Head Coach role. There are elements to him moving to Swansea that many haven’t thought of, and to be really honest us fans rarely do think about the bigger picture beyond football.

We’ve covered this before, especially when Lewis O’Brien was at the Swans. His issues were more motivated by money but his wife had been in Swansea for a while. She wasn’t that keen and alongside a new baby certain factors came into play. Lewis went for money and location as opposed to carrying on his Swansea journey. You can’t blame him for that, he had no ties or affiliation whatsoever with Swansea.

Thats a similar issue for Kim Hellberg, head coach at Hammarby IF, maybe not so much money but he too has a new addition to the family. His wife, Christina gave birth in mid October to a daughter and they have another child who is coming up to three years of age. Formative years for bringing up a child and deciding where they will be for potentially the next three years is so crucial for a young family. Remember Kim is only thirty seven. And there on of course his decisions in the immediate will affect what his next stages in life will lead to.

That’s massive.

Talking to a contact we have made in Sweden over the summer with regards to transfers from that country we are told that this will be primary in the minds of Kim and Christina. It’s a huge move for both of them. The caveat there is does Kim want to stay at Hammarby IF as he has been in discussions with Mikael Hjelmberg the clubs Sporting Director off and on over the last few weeks ? No decision has been made by Kim. Mikael is confident to an extent, the talks have gone well and he is quoted as stating he thinks he could get this new agreement over the line by Christmas. Of course the Swans won’t wait that long, in fact they want a rapid conclusion to their recent contact requesting details of costs to take Hellberg to Swansea. It is without doubt those ‘initial’ gambits could include extra staff, he won’t come alone to Wales.

That gives an insight into the non announcement by the Swans regards their current coaching staff and their particular future. It is usual that when a manager leaves a club at least mention is made of who is covering in the interim. That as of last night had not been indicated. Does that give a clue of the Swans determination to get this deal done rapidly ? We think so.

We can’t discount other contenders, Michael Carrick has numerous admirers and as a ‘free agent’ as such he won’t come with a buy out. However, his salary at Middlesbrough was very much double what Alan Sheehan was on, if not more so. He would be an agreeable choice but it’s most certainly Hellberg for now, Thats a fact. How far the Swans are down that path can only really be judged by the current coaching staff being unaware of their immediate futures.

The news we have on Hellberg and his current Hammarby contract is it will take around three million (Krona) crowns (250k ish) to free him from his contract but there’s more on top of that for the club to discuss and then there’s relocation etc … It isn’t cheap. His expectations on salary as a new head coach will be increased, we can’t forget any staff and buy out costs for them either. It will soon add up and that could lead to more than Hellberg’s initial contract buy out by a long way. How fluid is all this ?

Very.

Remember there’s no more free radical than people. They can change their minds in a heartbeat but the real focus is on Kim and his family, that will almost surely decide his immediate future. His record speaks for itself in professional football club management. If it’s solely based on football then he looks a shoe in. But it isn’t. The Swans too are again in gambling territory, but with more security attached to it than Alan Sheehan. Hellberg isn’t experienced at all in Championship football, his decisions if he does come to Swansea will dictate his immediate future. That’s Swansea City’s gamble, but as it stands it could well pay off in securing Kim Hellberg as the next Swansea City manager.

Can't believe that we are looking at a manager with no experience of championship football.
I can't remember the last time we had a manager with premiere league or championship experience before they came here. The championship is an unique league and surely we need someone who knows what it's all about
