RamBites: Reg to Rangers? - Hulse Tendon to Injury! - Extra Green in Midfield?

With genuinely exciting news at a premium, Rams fans are left to speculate as to whether much will be happening at Pride Park in the near future.

Reg to Rangers in time for Rams?

Luke Varney looks to be on the way out of Derby but exactly where remains a mystery. The good money seems to be on Queens Park Rangers or the club he arrived from in Charlton Athletic. Bristol City had been touted as a candidate for his services but signed two strikers recently which would seem to end their interest.

The talk is that if Varney had played on Saturday against Coventry it would have triggered a further payment to Charlton for appearances. This would be a better explanation for his absence that concern about possible injury if lining up for the Rams.

Nigel Clough was giving little away when asked about the Varney situation:

"There is still interest in Luke and there have been inquiries, I feel a bit sorry for him because he is in limbo at the moment. We will review the situation ahead of the weekend but there is still the likelihood somebody will come in for him."

“Something may happen with Luke soon”.

If Nigel feels sorry for him, he could always keep and play him but it seems his high wages coupled with an appearance fee have worked against Luke ever pulling on a Rams shirt again.

Hulse Tendon To Injury

It seems Rob Hulse may once again be missing in action for the home game against QPR. An Achilles tendon injury has been blamed for his recent absence from the squad and not a possible transfer as has been widely touted.

Porter is closer to a return from injury but Cywka will once again be at best find himself on the bench. Nigel Clough spoke to the DET about his lack of firepower and the fact Dean Moxey may once again be filled on to fill the void:

"Chris Porter will do his specific work in the early part of the week, with a view to joining in full training near the end of the week to see if he is OK for Saturday."

"Tomasz was a bit off it when he came on at Coventry, which is understandable. It was a gamble just to put him on the bench."

"If we have to use Dean again, we would have no problem with that, it would be a bit more difficult for him at home because, as a striker, away from home you have got a bit more licence, although we did play like the home team for the majority of the Coventry game".

"In some ways, it was a no-lose situation for Dean. He went up front, ran around, got himself a goal and did very well for us, apart from being offside too many times. There is no excuse for that".

"But he was certainly not the reason we lost the game."

In speaking to the official site Nigel Clough discussed possible transfers have become a waiting game:

"We're still waiting on decisions."

"A lot of clubs seem to want to wait until we hit the international break, and then allow their players out".

"So it could be Sunday, Monday or Tuesday before decisions are made on some players."

"We want to strengthen in the attacking area of the pitch, both up front and the attacking midfield area. We could even be looking at the sitting midfield area as well, just to give us more options throughout the team".

"It would be nice to have options, because at the moment the side is picking itself.

"It is encouraging we played so well with the limited options at Coventry, but we would like to have the options available to us."

Extra Green Midfield?

It is believed that Nigel left the Coventry game early to see lower league Dagenham & Redbridge midfielder Danny Green and Notts County midfielder Ben Davies. While first team coach Johnny Metgod was also out and about in Spain to keep tabs on another possible signing.

There were also strong rumours a Derby scout was on hand to see Adam LeFondre scored 4 goals in Rotherhams 6 – 4 victory against Cheltenham. If he is genuinely a Rams target then the club better be looking to pay a significant fee with numbers like 3 million pounds being bandied about to secure him.

Good luck with that!

Clough / Taylor statue revealed this Saturday!

Finally the Clough / Taylor statue will be unveiled by Tom Glick on Saturday at 1pm before the kick off against Rangers. You can attend the event by turning up at Unity Plaza and then celebrate the great achievements of two of the best managers (if not the best) that have ever graced English football.

It will be ironic that Glick will be unveiling a statue of managers that demanded investment and money be made available for them to realise their ambitions. This when Glick and partners do not seem interested in splashing any cash, or realise the ambitions of every supporter.

C’mon Tom. Show us the money!!

The sponsors paid for the statue, TG just did the arm-twisting to get the dosh from them...! One wonders how much GSE stumped up, if anything.

Clough & Taylor only spent £75k for fees on their first 3 signings in the mid-60s - McFarland, O'Hare & Hinton - but there already was quality at the club in Hector, Webster, Durban.

Then Mackay & Carlin would have cost a good whack in wages, they were succesful and coveted players already.

Clough Jnr had such an overpaid but ragbag squad to sort out as well as severe restrictions in the transfer market.

I expect he is quite schizophrenic in his view on the statue - delight & pride about the honour from a family standpoint, yet mindful of the impossibility of walking tall in their shadow because of the downsizing and arrested ambition of today's DCFC.
