Hands up who knew West Ham played in London? I've only just found out. 10:20 - Sep 2 with 4119 viewsKonk

West Ham calling their ground “The London stadium” — what a pile of wan k. And sticking the word “London” on their badge — everyone knows you’re in London, you fuc king idiots, because your fans never stop giving it the Knees up Mother Brown, Jellied eels schtick even though 90% of them have grown up in fu cking Southend or Benfleet.

This sort of wan k rebranding is presumably intended to convince anyone living in Shanghai put off supporting the club through an inability to locate West Ham on a globe, that West Ham are a worthy choice by virtue of playing down the road from Buckingham Palace and Harrods. It can’t be for a British market and this sort of desperately transparent attempt to sell shirts in the Far East does my head in. If only they'd thought have putting London on the badge a few years ago, they could have had Champions League wins to go alongside the World Cup.

Why not go the whole hog and sack the hammers off the badge for a silhouette of Tower Bridge, make Slaven Bilic wear a plastic copper’s helmet on the touchline and call the stadium the Lady Diana Big Ben Red Phone Box Black Cab stadium? Biff the claret and blue off and have the players running round in Beefeater outfits, you cun ts. Fu ck substitutes in tracksuits, what about getting them to dress up as Grenadier guards, stood in sentry boxes? The fourth official would have to lift their feet up to check their studs like a farrier checking a horse’s hoofs, as the subs stared impassively into the distance waiting for the whistle before marching onto the pitch, stopping, and stamping their feet.

What makes West Ham moving to Stratford even more unfortunate for poor old Leyton Orient, is that using the Allam/Tan school of football world domination logic, they’re the best placed side in the country to dominate the Far East; they’ve got the dragons on their badge, they play in red, they’ve even got Orient in their name. They wouldn’t have to change anything — no angry punters - bang a few lucky eights on the shirt and they could have filled the Olympic stadium with Chinese day trippers with bars packed throughout Asia as the O's stormed to glory.

If West Ham were the only club in London, and this was this only stadium in London, it would still represent a shocking lack of imagination and a boring choice. I’m calling it the Olympic stadium and Karen Brady, David Sullivan and David Gold can come and have a go if they think I’m gonna cave on this one; I hope I’m not alone and can rely on you lot to back me up.

There's a massive whiff of corruption about the whole West Ham Olympic Stadium business, but then nothing surprises these days I suppose. I do suspect though that sooner or later it will all go 'orribly wrong for the 'Ammers. One can only hope so anyway.

It all reminds me of the Briatore reign. He once mooted the idea of calling us London Park Rangers.

I used to like West Ham. Now I find myself smiling when I find out they've lost.

The porn barons and Karen Brady have sold the soul of the club for cash. The bubbles will burst soon enough. West Ham fans have been getting up my nose for years with this We won the World Cup, The Academy and playing the West Ham way.
Before Bilic took over they were a poor side to watch and have been for years.

Of course, those who are on the borders or hinterlands of a region often make the most noise about belonging - rather like Fulham fans claiming their club is in west London.

Indeed, until 1965 (and I know Disco hates this) those areas in what is now Newham - formed from the Essex County Boroughs of East Ham and West Ham - were not, arguably, actually in London - much less part of what might be called the East End of the City.

Here's a map of the LCC, as it was until the creation of the GLC in 1965.

As far as London is concerned the Irons are just a bunch of JCLs!

This also shows, as old-timers around here like to crow, that 'that little club out in Middlesex' has little claim, historically, to North London supremecy. A bit rich if you live in Islington and support an incoming club from Woolwich...

Our support is split on the W-SW thing - seems to largely depend whether you live south of the water or north. I was bought up to believe that nothing north of the water can be S, SE or SW London, so I'll always go with West London for Fulham, regardless of any evidence to the contrary! If Fulham played directly across the river from the Cottage, I'd happily go along with us being a SW London club.

Harry remains a horrible self-serving lying snake of a man but the chapter in his book about how West Ham treated Bobby Moore is really interesting.

The fact that they have 1966 in their phone number tells you all you need to know. Deluded, arrogant, rubbish, living in the past. The Liverpool FC of London.

Not been there admittedly but their new stadium, do you need binoculars to see the action as there is quite a large space in-beween the fans and the pitch due to a running track?

I really hate that about football stadiums.

The London boundary seems to be loose and interchangeable - depending on circumstances. Estate agents refer to having 'London' offices in Richmond and Teddington, plus there is the ultimately insulting 'London Luton' Airport - WTF is that all about?

Apparently, Barnet are a London club (!!!!) - according to some radio stations / websites. And Watford (!)

As I work in Shoebury(Southend) & live in Benfleet I can perhaps shed some light in the West Ham thing. All claim to be part of the East End migration to better & more furtive land but not forgetting their roots in post war misery. Proud to be linked to the pearly kings & queen tradition that their forefathers abided by. The World Cup that they won, their own Bobby Moore born in Barking just like John Terry was. Inventing the Sunday tea of winkle sandwiches, gritty cockles & bread & dripping.
Fact is until the opening of the Olympic stadium none of them went but now they've got that £149 ST & a pair of opera glasses.
Fcuking hate 'em

I never used to mind the Hammers , had a lot of mates who followed them
like it or not there away support during the last 30 years has been top notch considering they have been mostly crap
that being said I cant stand them now especially that little gimp Sullivan & sl&g Brady
also what's with this stupid vvanky x-faxtor /hammers sign all the players do , its so cringeworthy and sums up modern football , I didn't see ray stewart doing that back in the 80's, also they have t0ssed off the Europa league the 2 seasons by not bothering as the Premier league is more important
the clubs has sold out and lost its soul , they had a ground with character with some decent fans , now they have 30k extra cling ons from Essex following them in a stadium that is an eye sore and about 100 yards from the pitch, they can just about sing "bubbles" once during the game and people think they are now going to an event,
well the day that happens to us in the 40k Air Asia bowl is the day I turn it all in
its all sad , when I was younger as an away fan there was something special going to WHL, Highbury, Upton Park, walking through those dodgy estates to the ground etc gave those places a certain edge ,now they are just like any other soulless club with a huge bowl for a stadium ie ordinary & dull

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

Although you can, as we found out last month, get there and back on your Oyster.
Eight nicker each way to St Pancras.

Could the Oyster now provide us with yet another London border delineation?

Although, and I know people on here like the occasional travel tip, booked in advance, for four people travelling together it was £20 and change, St P to Gatwick.

I don't blame West Ham per se for the stadium, they saw the chance and rinsed the Olympic Legacy people for all they're worth. It's the latter that need to answer questions as to why they gave it away so cheap and the public footing the bill. Desperation to not have an empty stadium I'm sure.

However, West Ham calling it the London Stadium I do have a problem with. We're not a one-club city and no one club has the right, ever, to lay claim to the title of London. Only Wembley IMO should probably be close to that.

The Olympic Stadium is what it should be called and West Ham should be used to having a ground that is called something different to it's supposedly official name.

Oh, and yes, the whole 'we won the world cup' is fking annoying. I've seen TV footage of the '66 final and it looks to me like there's eleven English players on the pitch rather than three that the world is meant to believe. Cnts.

In my first week at university, my next door neighbour was chatting to this belter in our halls bar, who would come to be known amongst our friendship group for the next 3 years as Rat Boy.

He asked me where I was from in the ensuing conversation, and I remarked "London"

"Oh", he replied, interest piqued. "Where abouts?"

"Well, I was born in Hammersmith, then lived Acton kinda way, but mostly grew up in Hillingdon"

His face filled with disdain. He had the tinge of posh to his voice, and I suspected he was dying for me to be from somewhere poor so he could lambaste it (That would transpire to be another belter in halls who couldn't believe my pals and I were moving to Chalk Farm "The only place to live in London is the two mile circumference of Harrods").

"Ugh, that's not proper London, you're just a dirty daytripper. Insulting to proper Londoners like me to hear stuff like that."

"Oh, where are you from?" said in a cool, meek voice (This was when I was still the retiring violet before I decided my life was too short to not challenge nonsense).

"huh" he grunted with satisfaction as he placed his hand on the side of the pool table, and lent back trying to look as arrogant as possible.

"High Barnet"

Your mention of Hillingdon made me think of the mystery of Middlesex - does it exist?

Post coding software now puts Sunbury in Surrey (for example) and the 1961 census showed Brentford and Tottenham as part of Middlesex.

I was born in Ashford, Middlesex (apparently now also Surrey) - just down the road from 'Staines Upon Thames'

Yes well they're you go I cant really add to this conversation other than this stupid fact, many decades ago when coming home from Saturday games at LR it used to take an eternity to get to Waterloo Station, however by the time we/I got there low and behold you could buy a pink Evening Standard or Evening News that would have all of that days football results in it and all of the London clubs were separately highlighted (including WHU or London United or Karen's 400 X 400 metres hurdles United or whatever the fck they are now called)
So in essence I've known that WHU have played in London for an awful long time in fact since jellied eels were wobbling around like wonkey wheels.
