Long throws 11:37 - Oct 5 with 2341 viewsNorthernr

If you don't have a guy with a long throw, you can't take long throws at the football game. It's not something you can wish into being.

That Adomah incident last night was embarrassing. We've got to stand there and watch that surrounded by 30,000 Leeds fans, don't humiliate us like that again please.

Yes. It is bad enough with our alleged long throw merchant Smyth who can't do it, then to have Albert do it....who's next? I presume Paal after his masterclass yesterday. Or we could go back to Dykes which makes about as much sense as putting your centre forward in goal when 1-0 down in the last few minutes of a match.

Sigh.

We've been practising long throws and free kicks and corners since our last home win which was apparently In the year when the Roman emperor Claudius launched an invasion of Britain.

We haven't quite got the hang of it yet.

I actually remember way back when getting a wee bit excited when we used to get a corner, now If we get a corner I just sit there looking like a disinterested big lump of tofu.

It was truly embarrassing and I immediately felt for the R’s fans behind Albert having to suffer that .

I don’t think I’ve ever seen that at any other level of football except school football or under 8’s on a Sunday morning .

No excuse for Albert or Lyndon to continue with the ‘process’ when they both knew as we all did beforehand that Albert wasn’t going to reach .
At least Kolli tried to show short for him. Christ it’s just excruciating and showed there is no imagination from the players at all.

File with Richards bootlaces at Rotherham etc etc etc

Oh for the glory days of Jay Emanuel-Thomas taking a long throw into the box when we have no one within 15 yards of the ball.

Adomah’s was like something from Sunday league where your hungover mate who’s turned up to make eleven players told you before he once threw a kettle over a pub. Possibly the most amateur thing I’ve ever seen at this level.

Now that they set balls up on little tees at the side of the pitch, we could use that to our advantage, certainly at home games.

Replace the teed up ball with a shot putt and Smythie will simply take out the nearest defender. Knowing our lot, it’d be the first time one of our forwards decides to attack the near post.

Is there video of this anywhere, for the masochists among us?

The long throw thing seems symptomatic of a basic lack of pattern of play or creative ideas, as well as being downright embarrassing.

What I saw much of last night (and in recent games) looks more like what we used to do when I played sunday league 20 years back. Run, run, run, lump it long, chase, players pulled out of position as we do, this. By the time the ball comes to someone on your team their tired from all that running and chasing and mess it up.

It really makes me wonder what they do all week in training. GA and dobbo simply have to find a pattern of play (which works for more than 2 games).

When was the last time we scored or even threatened to score from a set piece?

Rory was appointed in the summer by new Maccabi Tel Aviv manager Robbie Keane as his Assistant, while son Liam is currently on loan to Hull City from Manchester City.

Meanwhile, there is a facinating entry on Rory's wiki page about his throw-ins:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rory_Delap

Wiki mentions that Rory was a former schoolboy javelin champion. I always remember one day when I was 12 or 13, our P.E. teacher searched out some old athletics equipment - javelins, discus, shot putts etc - and took us out onto the playing fields to have a go.

We were all predictably pretty useless, with most, including me, being barely able to throw a javelin the length of ourselves. Until one lad, Ian, stepped forward and launched it far into the distance, to all round applause.

The thing is, he wasn't at all sporty, even though the school concentrated heavily on rugby and rowing etc, which he studiously avoided. In fact he was weedy and a bit of a swot.

Anyhow, his family moved to another part of the country at the end of that year, so that was the last I heard of him. Until about 15 or 16 years later I was looking through the sports section of the local paper and saw his name (a very unusual one) - he was only the NI Decathlon champion for that season!

Anyhow, I wonder whether football clubs aren't missing a trick by not inviting a proper athletics/javelin coach to come in and assess the entire playing staff (excluding goalkeepers, obviously!), to see whether anyone has a natural aptitude for throwing? Then anyone who did fit the bill could receive extra, specialised training to hone their technique and effectiveness.

Is there any law preventing outfield players from wearing gloves with some sort of grip on them?It would certainly do away with the need for towels used for long throws.
The gloves that Casemiro wears look like they might have some sort of extra grip on the palms.

Sadly not. I think that was the game Ramsey really copped it from the away end at Griffin Park but could have been a different manager. Think we lost 3-0 in an evening game.

Rory Delap was a Javelin champion in his youth.

When Stoke bought him they had no idea he could throw a ball that far and only found out by accident because they had a throw in comp after training one day.

One other thing that annoyed me last night was at least three times we had a break, got a throw at least midway inside their half, then nobody shows the ball and it gets thrown back to halfway so Leeds have completely reset.
Surely a it of movement on a throw in is basic.
If last night was supposed to be a game like Burnley away last year, you have to defend aggressively and put everyone behind the ball. We had no forward moves yet still had dykes, Armstrong and chair easily bypassed and Smyth or paal were often upfield and they just played it into the space. If its going to be bleak at least pack the defence properly!

Worst thing about the Adomah one was we did a quick throw which found a player in space the ref blew up and we took it too far back we had to go nearer corner flag which then saw that long throw effort
