I know Jack Ship about climate issues except that we had the Little Ice Age from Tudor times to the Victorian era. Was it the industrial revolution that caused the end of that ?
There was no Met Office then, so we just have parish records to tell.
I remember reading in a book about accounts in parish records around the time of the Great War of farmworkers dying of the heat in fields. There were reports of poor people in London sleeping on benches in the streets of East London as their cramped dwellings were unbearable.
About 30 years later, the Great Freeze of 1947 and a time that I remember, the Great Winter of 62-63. I saw a bird die in mid-flight and the old boy nextdoor to me came back from buying some baccer in the corner shop, and his hat had frozen to his head.

Sunak saying he had to go without Sky TV as a kid. What deprivation ! How did he cope ?
My wife asked why elections are always on Thursdays.
I told her they used to be on Saturdays but Sky changed it.

I've been attending at our crumbling edifice since 1956 so at my age I doubt if I'll need to worry about a possible new ground.

The Concept album
at 23:11 9 Jun 2024

Generally thought to have started in the progrock era but in my collection I have two from the mid-fifties : West Coast Suite by Mel Torme which is about, well, the West Coast of the USA, and Just Strike A Match by April Ames which is an album about cigarettes ( I kid you not) .
Favourite concept albums anyone ?

Top tip (s). I go into the William Morris in the ‘smith ( Hammersmith ) a few times a week. Not bad at all for Spoons.
I always sit in clear view of the bar and pounce when not busy. If they're very busy I buy two drinks at once then pounce as stated when clear.

I used to drink in the Thatched House in Dalling Rd.
The Guv was Bedford Jezzard, Fulham & England centre forward, and manager of Fulham.
I used to tell punters that he transferred Rodney to us, but it was of course Buckingham.
A fine man…..

Queue ? Just back from 2 hours in the Andover in Hammersmith (on a Saturday ! ), more or less the only punter there.
Fine beer, menu that includes oysters, moules marinaire, wagyu burgers etc but no punters.
I remember when you were lucky to get in there at all Saturday lunchtime.

That generation, quite correctly, was dubbed the Golden Generation.
Without wishing to tar everyone with the same brush, it's difficult to avoid the summation that subsequent generations have let them down.
As previous posters have said, let's raise a glass, nay, many glasses to them tomorrow.

June is bustin' out all over. Or so the song from the film said.
I think Messrs Fuller Smith & Turner have ensured a good night's sleep.

I had a chat to our Lib Dem candidate today. He said if they do poorly in the General Election, they'll contest the Jamaican election next year and call themselves Dem Libs.

Quick history lesson….when the old age pension, as it used to be called, was introduced in 1910 ( I was just a kid then ), it was called ninepence for fourpence which referred to the ratio of money paid in to money paid out.
Right, I've got tuppence left in me pocket, just up to the pub for 2 pints.

So what term was used for pensions pre 2014 I wonder ? And what caused the pension to have a different nomenclature ?

Just semantics. Call a pussy cat a tiger but it's still a pussy cat.
In no way should it be termed a benefit when discussed alongside things like Universal Credit.
