OT : Cricket World Cup 09:14 - Jan 29 with 9638 viewsbasilrobbiereborn

Not long to wait for this now. Looking at the format you would think we would be strong enough to get through the group stage (although Bangladesh would be a bit of a worry), but I can't really see us getting much further than the QF unless the draw does us a favour or two.

Australia or the Saffers to win it for me, with New Zealand and Pakistan dark horses from either side of the draw. So get your money on India.

Icon? It's all Rio Ferdinand's fault.

WORLD CUP

England v Afghanistan

Match cut to 25 overs due to rain.

Very easy win for England. D/L, which Osbourne thinks stands for "Duckworth Lewis method of calculation" needed to transfer Afghanistans total to a 25 over total. England got the runs required for the loss of just one wicket.

Osbourne's memory being tested, but I think it was England needing "D/L" 101 in 25 overs.

Well done England. Just as well England put Afghanistan in to bat though. In a rain affected match like this, everything is in favour of the team batting 2nd.

Not for England unfortunately, but onwards to the World Cup Quarter Finals now.

Osbourne will try. However, now that England are out, Osbourne's interest in the World Cup definitely diminishes.

However, I have my bet on India, they will probably play Bangladesh in the Quarter Final, so into the semi Final they go. So Osbourne will be watching!

Mr Boycott, could you sum up England's World Cup in 3 words?

"I don't neeeeeeeeeed three wooooords, juuuuuuust one will dooooooo, RUBBBBBISH."

KP now in Australia to commentate!

KP seems to think he will now be playing in 2015 Ashes. I wonder if he will - Paul Downton Factor?

Osbourne thinks the 2015 Ashes would be better for the spectators if KP plays. KP v David Warner is always a spectacle.

Any views?

Unlucky, Ireland. West Indies get the nod on run rate.

Quarter Final line up :

18th March : South Africa v Sir Lanka - Sydney
19th March : India v Bangladesh - Melbourne
20th March : Australia v Pakistan - Adelaide
21st March : New Zealand v West Indies - Wellington

Semi Final line up?

24th March : NZ or WI v SA or Sir L - Auckland
26th March : Australia or Pakistan v India or Bangladesh - Sydney

Final

29th March - Melbourne

For India to win looks like they are going to have to beat : Bangladesh, Australia and New Zealand. Not sure how safe Osbourne's bet is looking!

Should be some good matches coming up.

Osbourne here.
Osbourne has got over Saturdays reversal at Bournemouth, 4-0. 17/1 Osbourne had. 17/1 - blimey. Osbourne is now getting ready for the double win v Charlton on Tuesday night and Leeds on Saturday, both at Bloomfield Road.

Osbourne is also getting ready for India's run in the World Cup to end with the Trophy. 3 more wins and India, Osbourne's selection, win the World Cup.

Odds as of today (Monday 16.3.15)

Australia - 15/8
NZ - 4
INDIA!!!! - 17/4
SA - 9/2
Sir Lanka - 16
Pakistan - 25
WI - 50
Bangladesh - 250

So what chance has Osbourne got of a winning bet? Blackpool FC haven't bought Osbourne many winning bets 2014-15. Unless Osbourne can do something with the last 9 games of Pool's season then I am going to end the season down on the bookies. But that never happens Osbourne. Well lets see if India can help out by winning the World Cup!

INDIA'S CHANCES?
India could hardly get a run or wicket in the TRI - SERIES with England and Australia immediately prior to the World Cup. They were beaten 2 times by England.

However, India play 1 day cricket seriously. 20/20 or this 50 over format, the Indian's know that their fans love it. For the Quarter Final v Bangladesh, Melbourne will be transformed into Calcutta for the day!

MS Dhoni, the Indian captain is good. The batting line up is brilliant and in Mohammed Shami India have a "lightening" fast bowler. The Indian fielding is seriously sharp into the bargain.

Who won the last World Cup? India of course. Who will win the 2015 World Cup? Osbourne says, India of course.

Looks like Osbourne has got a good bet going here then with India. But nevertheless, Bangladesh are being quoted as 250/1 shot outsiders. Osbourne is just wondering if £10 there might just revamp all the money that Pool have lost Osbourne 2014-15

Erm, Osbourne wonders, how much would that tenner give me? - £2500.
Well Bangladesh did beat England and England are probably almost as good as India.
Osbourne wonders? What about Australia and New Zealand though?

Osbourne here,
1st Quarter Final, Wednesday morning 3.30am, Sydney, South Africa v Sir Lanka

Difficult to predict, this one. Bookmakers saying South Africa :
South Africa 8/15 Sir Lanka 2/1.

SOUTH AFRICA :
Known as the "Chokers."
Top aggregate scorers in the tournament, although they have lost to India and Pakistan.
AB de Villiers is their star batsman.

SIR LANKA :
Kumar Sangakkara's 4 consecutive centuries suggests he is good! He is also a good wicket keeper.

Osbourne's prediction :
As "Basil" has suggested, if there is going to be an upset in these Quarter Finals, then here it is. South Africa, "The Chokers" could get Sir Lankaed here!
Kumar Sangakkara will get yet another century and AB de Villiers will start trying to hit 6's too early in his innings and fall for less than 20.

KP is on the BBC radio commentary team, if Geoffrey is in there too then there could be some interesting exchanges between the two ego heads! Agnew will arbitrate, he should be in a good mood as England are back in the UK already!

Osbourne, saying it as he sees it. Sir Lanka win Wednesday morning. Thursday morning and the Indians finish the tremendous Bangladeshians off in the 2nd Quarter Final.

South Afria "The Chokers" and the Bangladeshians.

Osbourne here,
2nd Quarter Final, Thursday morning 3.30am, Melbourne, India v Bangladesh.

Not difficult to predict this one. Bookmakers giving Bangladesh no chance and indeed Bangladesh have no chance!
India 1/6 Bangladesh 11/2.

INDIA :
Osbourne's selection to win the World Cup.
The Melbourne Cricket Ground will be transformed into Calcutta for the day!
20/20 or 50 over format, India are experts and their fans love it!
MS Dhoni as their first class captain.
The Indian batting line up is simply formidable.
A lightening quick bowler in Mohammed Shami.
Superb fielding side. They simply do not drop catches or give free runs away.
Holders of the World Cup, 3 matches away from retaining the trophy.
Should Osbourne collect his "winning bet" money now?

BANGLADESH :
No chance.
In 28 one day internationals v India they have won only 3!
On their plus side, they defeated England and almost New Zealand (pushed them to within 2 overs.)
This Quarter Final with India is as far as it goes for the Bangladeshians. A Quarter Final birth for them is their equivalent of winning the World Cup!

So as far as Osbourne is concerned, it is to the slayers of England - Bangladesh.
Lets remember, Osbourne called the 1st Quarter Final correctly!

ENGLAND :

Jonathan Trott recalled to the England touring party for the 3 Test series v West Indies in April and May.

Trott came home early from the 2013-14 Ashes series. Trott should be back in the Test side for the 2015 home Ashes series.

Also, the excitement about KP's (Kevin Pietersen) return to the English Test side for the same Ashes home series has been dealt a blow by selector, James Whitaker - give him a chocolate - saying : "Kevin Pietersen is not part of England's plans."

Osbourne says : "Good luck Trott." "If KP promises to eat a bar of chocolate a day, could he play please Mr Whitaker? David Warner and Mitch Johnson are big and a handfull. Whilst, Michele Clarke will be chirping 'were going to break your arms,' amongst other uncouth comments. Perhaps best if KP is there, Osbourne feels. Didn't David Warner have a fight with Joe Root in a Birmingham bar?"

Looking forward to listening to KP and Geoffrey on the radio tonight. I wonder what Geoffrey would make of Blackpool FC's form of 2014-15?

India won toss and batted. 302 for 6 off their 50 overs, Ro Sharma hit 137.

Osbourne here,
3rd QUARTER FINAL, Friday morning 3.30am, Adelaide, Australia v Pakistan.

Book makers say Australia.
Australia 1/4 Pakistan 18/5.
Osbourne says, it would be nice to see the "Cocky" Australians out!

PAKISTAN :
They have a good pace attack.
In the Group Stage, Pakistan defended the 2 lowest totals to win the match bowling 2nd. Their bowlers then are good. Intelligent bowlers and fielders. Bowlers Rahat Ali, Mohammad Irfan and Wahab Riaz are Pakistan's match winners.
If Pakistan have a good batting day, they could topple "the men in the baggy green caps."

AUSTRALIA :
Michael Clarke does not fit the standard prototype of an Australian captain. ie Just enough social niceties to get by but nothing more, eg Don Bradman, Ian Chappel, Greg Chappel, Allan Border. Serious tough nuts the 4 of them. Michael Clarke in comparison, a mere "pussy cat." There is a negative then. A cricket captain is the main man.

However, a fantastic one day bowler in Mitchell Starc. King of the "Yorker."
Strong batting to, Glenn Maxwell can lose the ball and often! David Warner, although "uncouth" in the gob, can bat.

Mitch Johnson is very, very quick. Left arm as well. Chirpy in to the bargain.

Osbourne says, Good luck Pakistan. If you have a good batting day, you could do them.

Osbourne is calling Pakistan here. Why? Because Osbourne dislikes the Australians so intensely! Especially, Michael Clarke, Mitch Johnson and David Warner. Especially, David Warner.

to Australia.

India 302 for 6 being chased by Bangladeshians 193 all out in 45 overs.

India march on much to Osbourne's delight!

Bangladesh. A good World Cup for them. No match for India though.

Osbourne here,

3rd Quarter Final.
Easy win for Australia. Pity.

Pakistan's 213 all out in 49.5 overs being chased by Australia's 216 for 4 in 33.5 overs.

"basilrobbie" thanks for braking the monotony!
Yes, so far, South Africa, India and Australia.

Pakistan.

Osbourne here,
4th Quarter Final, Saturday morning 1.00am, Wellington, New Zealand v West Indies.

Bookmakers say New Zealand.
New Zealand 3/10 West Indies 3/1.
Osbourne says probably New Zealand unless Chris Gayle can get going!

NEW ZEALAND :
Won all their Pool games.
They have dangerous players everywhere.

WEST INDIES :
Inconsistent, indisciplined, lackadaisical!
Their batting is questionable.
Chris Gayle is their leading scorer with 279 runs. 215 of them in one innings!
Chris Gayle also has to pass a late fitness test to play.

Osbourne is calling New Zealand here. If Chris Gayle plays and gets going then West Indies could cause an upset. Osbourne loves Chris Gayle. Boy can he hit them!

1st Semi Final comes out of these two. South Africa v NZ or WI.

NB Apart from Osbourne and "basilrobbie," is anyone on AVFTT following this World Cup now that England are out? Osbourne is beginning to wonder? Blimey, what is the attendance going to be at Stanley Park, Blackpool in July when Lancashire meet Middlesex in the Royal London 50 overs competition?! Osbourne will be there. Given good weather, should be a cracking day.

Osbourne will be found either in the William Hill Tent or the Beer Tent!

ON paper, NZ are strong favourites tonight, and have the incentive of a home S/F if they win, I believe. IT will be interesting to see which West Indies team shows up.

I think my debut at a Lancy match may be the game at Northants at the beginning of May.

Icon? It's all Rio Ferdinand's fault.

What this world cup shows is you need a pace attack worthy of that tag plus a bit of guile in the spin attack.

Medium pace and no turn spin or flight are dispatched to all areas.

Similarly when batting, nurdling singles is pointless. Basically, it's 20/20 for 50 overs.

We were lacking the basic skills in all areas of the game.

Osbourne here,

Great to see you on this "Thread" 'Plumbs.'
Lots of people are viewing the cricket thread, but not many posting?
Since the Quarter Finals started, it's just Osbourne, Robbie and you!

People must be following the cricket World Cup! Osbourne really is getting worried how many Blackpool cricket followers will be attending the Royal London 50 over competition match between Lancashire and Middlesex on Wednesday 29th July at Stanley Park, Blackpool. If it is a nice day, Osbourne is wanting a "Full house."

Lets remember, just about all the Lancashire home matches are now played at Old Trafford. There was no match at Blackpool last summer. Cricket followers in Blackpool and surrounds should really make an effort to support this match. Osbourne, being selfish! really wants to see a 4 day Championship match at Blackpool again. Now 4 day cricket in Osbourne's mind is proper cricket.

2015 season, Lancashire play all their home matches at Old Trafford apart from, the above mentioned Royal London 50 over fixture at Blackpool. Another Royal London fixture at Liverpool and a Championship match in May at Southport and Birkdale.

Osbourne will be at Stanley Park on 29th July. Hopefully at Liverpool and Southport too.

Also, whilst on the cricket thread :

In the Thursday edition of the Blackpool Gazette there is a good article by Rob Stocks who Osbourne often enjoys reading in the Gazette. Rob Stocks follows Fleetwood FC (very well Osbourne might add) as Will Watt covers Blackpool FC (also well.) Stocks writes some other good stuff too. As does Will too!

In the article on page 70. Mr Stocks discusses the possibility of KP (Kevin Pietersen) playing for England again. In the home Ashes series of 2015 really. The Pietersen issue is obviously in the news. Pietersen claiming he has a chance of playing.

Rob Stocks then says the following, and for what it is worth, Osbourne agrees with Rob Stocks 100%. Lord Maclaurin when he was Chairman of the ECB is responsible for ruining English County Cricket by these ridiculous "central contracts." In the process the English cricket side is no better or worse than it ever was. But County Cricket in England has really suffered. This is what Rob Stocks wrote :

"......................Rather than go round in circles on the same subject, and making no end of headlines in the process (Osbourne's addition: That's talking about the KP issue of returning for the 2015 home Ashes series), it might be better for English Cricket to concentrate on getting its own house in order. That needs to start with an end to centralised contracts, a system which has produced a dull as dishwater domestic game in which up and coming talent is rarely tested against the very best. It's time to forget Pietersen, yesterday's man, and worry about a flawed system which is failing to produce England's stars for the future."

Back to Osbourne : Osbourne agrees with most of that. However, Osbourne says :
1. Get KP back in the England side for the home Ashes series. Clarke, Warner, Johnson are hard nosed so and so's who need someone like Pietersen to stand up to them.
2. Don't underestimate the standard of English County Cricket. The problem with centralised contracts is that when cricket followers go to county games they want to see the big names.
3. Centralised Contracts have made English Cricket "elitist." Osbourne says, go back to the way it was in the 1970's and 80's. Prioritise County Cricket and pick the best XI for each Test Match or One Day International from County Cricketers in form. After all cricket is cricket. Form players win matches.

Anyway, well said Rob Stocks.
Any views on AVFTT?

Osbourne here,

News from Adelaide. Australia v Pakistan. Quarter Final 3.
Pakistan won toss and batted. 213 all out off 49.5 overs. No one scored anything worth of note.

Australia 57 for 1 off 10.1 overs.

Australia then virtually into the Semi Final.

Pity!

Saturday morning 1.00am Wellington, New Zealand v West Indies.

2nd Semi Final looks like being India v Australia.
Bowl well Pakistan!

Osbourne here,

News from Wellington. New Zealand v West Indies. Quarter Final 4.
New Zealand have made 393, one of their batsmen has scored 237! How many?

West Indies are 209 for 8 off 25.3 overs. Chris Gayle scored 67 Osbourne thinks with 8 sixes! But Gayle is out, so it is "good night to the Windies."

Pity, Gayle is huge entertainment. Osbourne would of liked to of seen him in a Semi Final!

Few days break now, then on to the Semi Finals.
Chris Gayle and the West Indies.
