I'm not in favour of him coming here but, correct me if I'm wrong, didn't he dig Sunderland out of a deep hole when they looked dead and buried by inspiring them to win something like 8 games on the bounce to escape relegation a couple of seasons back. Not sure of the exact details but it was a phenomenal escape and doesn't sound like someone who's only a good manager when things are going well.
Yes he dug them out of a hole with a short term fix.
When given the broader job of building the club into a consistent team he took them backwards and Sunderland got themselves a Dick.

Mackems never had one single good thing to say about Poyet's management when he was there. In fact it was a lot like the situation here now - all along the lines of "You don't know what you're doing".
