Russell Martin's comments post match 10:42 - Oct 21 with 4599 views | Thrasher6 | Really interesting on Piroe and Paterson especially....(sorry to deflect from the post just put up, but these comments are worth talking about in their own context) Post match Russell Martin was philosophical about his teams performance. “We played with such intensity in the second half, we deserved to win, I really enjoyed what we did tonight. These players are giving us everything with no ego whatsoever. We spend so much time together, I’m so proud of them and what they are achieving here. West Brom are so good, they have some fantastic players, and are a real threat. On Piroe’s goal, “Joel needs to relax a little bit more in front of goal, and he has worked well on that, he is now feeling no anxiety in front of goal at all. So it’s working. He is another one with no ego, he has dropped all of that, whatever he thought he was two months ago has gone. Jamie Paterson is the same. He fought really hard against our philosophy for weeks, then saw the light as such, he sees the connections now, and it’s paying off for all of us. We said before the game let's just please back up the performance on Sunday with another one and thankfully we have done that." “Let’s be clear” added Martin, “We are nowhere near where we want to be, the process remains the same, the stuff we need to improve on is there for all to see. Olly ( Ntcham ) is such a leader, he is strong and skilful, and adds a different dimension to our game. He got frustrated as he had chances to score, but thats the measure of him as a player. Our frustration if there was one in the first half was our need to get forward quicker, get possession back faster, and take set pieces quicker. That’s what we want” On Joel Piroe Russell Martin was very honest “ When I first came here I saw someone who was worried, he had just signed and the manager had gone, he was exceptionally worried to be honest, but I saw nothing in him that told me he wanted to play. From there we had a talk and he knuckled down, that first week though he was lost. He is now willing to learn, buys in to what we are doing, and is reaping the rewards, everyone can see that now, and so can he”

Russell Martin's comments post match on 11:24 - Oct 21 with 2874 views | Dr_Parnassus | There has clearly been some rifts in the camp with the way Martin wanted to play, it was ludicrous to be fair and as a fan I was probably on the same page as Pato and Piroe, im sure there were more too. That was clear from the Bristol City protest game, or so it appeared from Martins comments with the players taking it into their own hands and getting the first win against his tactical instructions. It does look like they have reached a happy medium now and that is showing in the new mixed style. whether Martin will admit that is another thing, but he is the gaffer and needs to command that respect I suppose.

What he has done with Piroe has been brilliant. After the friendly games many were "concerned" we had signed a dud, shopping in bargain basement etc. But by the looks Russ had a clear plan for him, the proof is in the pudding at the moment that Russ was right. Pato another player flourishing aswell. Was always going to be a few dissenters in the camp, Russell Martin said himself he has a completely different way of doing things it will take some getting used to. Piroe's comments on him speaks volumes aswell. Proper manager.

It’s what he said mate, and fair play to him for putting that point forward. Pato and Piroe have learned from him big time, no reason he shouldn’t mention they were difficult to handle at the start. Shows how good Martin is as a mentor and coach.

Russell Martin's comments post match on 11:49 - Oct 21 with 2815 views | Dr_Parnassus | Something clearly came to a head. He is not going to come out and say he bowed to the players, that would be a disaster. I think we can read between the lines with the change of style since however and how these two in particular are now flourishing in this more direct style. Piroe in particular must have been tearing his hair out with 800 passes in the defensive third. Can anyone blame him for being annoyed?

He bought in to it thankfully. Otherwise he would be sat further back than Whittaker. Its about time these players bought bigger mirrors.

I think it was more a compromise than him buying into it, we play completely different now. I think he has bought into the compromise maybe, as have I. Triple the amount of long balls than prior to the Bristol game. It's stark. The way he was trying to get us to play early on was ludicrous, it really was. That Bristol game could be the most important of the season, it was clearly the seed that sparked the change. There was some testing and confirmation after that too, Luton first and second half comes to mind. Since then we haven't really looked back. [Post edited 21 Oct 2021 12:11]

And yet bottom half. Those stats have largely come from games we haven’t won. Since we (Martin and the players) have changed to a less short passing style we have had success with it. If our success is to continue then we should slide down those lists, as being top of them certainly hindered us. [Post edited 21 Oct 2021 12:51]

Russell Martin's comments post match on 12:56 - Oct 21 with 2720 views | Catullus | Isn't it inevitable for a new player to be worried when the manager changes just after you arrive? Specially so when there is such a big change in philosophy. So far Martin looks like a fantastic choice, he's won the players and the vast majority of the fans over. 10 weeks in and we are starting to look like promotion challengers. It's more than I expected or hoped for and even better, the games are very enjoyable. I don't know how much room for improvement there still is but if we continue to improve...yes I'm going to say it....the play offs are a possibility and the derby double is on!

This is absolute nonsense, Keith can you please put it to bed because it's coming from the usual suspects and it's getting ridiculous now. We should all be coming together after 2 good results but this rubbish is now being filtered in on these forums. Russell Martin's comments post match on 16:12 - Oct 21 with 2523 views | ploppy | Don't know where to start here, there so much mis-quoting and/or misunderstanding. In his post match comments, Martin said re Piroe: "We JOKE with Joel all the time that he needs to relax a bit more in front of goal ...". Clearly this is a tongue in cheek reference to the fact that he's as cool as a cucumber in front of goal. He hasn't worked on this since the start of the season, that's how he always was. He "feels no anxiety in front of goal". And re Pato: "... first 3 or 4 weeks probably fighting against what he'd been doing, or told to do, before". In other words, adjusting to play the way we play rather than the way he was being wasted at other clubs - basically, un-learning the way he'd been asked to play elsewhere. Nothing about "fighting really hard against our philosophy". Where did that come from? Plus, this notion that there's been a player revolt and that the players took it on themselves to change the style of play, or that they've convinced RM to change the style of play is complete nonsense IMHO. I see no evidence of that. [Post edited 21 Oct 2021 16:41]

Watch Martin's interview form last night listen to what he says about Piroe from about 2.09 minutes I quote " he has no ego he has dropped anything".....pause "umm he felt he was or wanted to do".....that implies there was something early doors? Totally agree about coming together but unfortunately "rubbish like this" may have some substance...amd there has been "plently of other rubbish like this " posted over recent years

I think most people would have moved to a new job or got a new manager who wants to change things and faces resistance. But over time people buy into it and the relationship strengthens. It’s a natural part of any job.

It implies nothing of the such. I don't condone any rubbish like this myself even if you state that it may have substance and on the same line it may have no substance. As I say, don't condone tittle tattle like this and don't appreciate it being used as a tool to enhance a poster as it has no substance.

It's crazy! These same clowns had the knives out for Martin early doors, picked on his early games and now he is turning it around slowly have the gaul to say he is switching his style rather than given him a little headroom before judging his style a few months in after he has had time to impliment it! Its f'in Childish at the highest level and is only undone by the replies that are so contradictive that it makes me wonder Wether I am coming or going by just reading them.

See, yet more negativity. The passing figures are consistently over 500 The stats have come from all the games we played but you have to highlight the negative despite 2 very good wins where those stats are still true. We are still a passing and possession based team, the number of long passes is a small amount of the total. I look forward to your view if those stats stay around the same area and we move up the division, as most of us expect to. Why not accentuate the positive when there is plenty of positive to talk about?

It's pathetic. There's be no change in style, neither from RM or the players. If there was we wouldn't be seeing the possession stats we're seeing. It's clear that some people have an agenda on here. And as for Piroe, he came to us before RM. He may have been expecting to play a particular style of play where he was involved more in build up play. On top of that, he'd come from a league where there's mush less intensity so he was, and maybe is still, not fit enough. Having said all that, boy is he reaping the benefits of our style of play. Nothing to see here. Move on.
