Wales v England : Matchday Thread
at 22:03 29 Nov 2022

As I have been saying for a number of years - the young players coming through for Wales are very poor compared to those they're replacing.

James, Williams, Wilson and others might have big reputations due to their brief tenure at elite English clubs like Manchester United, however they very quickly found out they were out of their depth and begun their rightful journey back down England's football pyramid.

James caught a lucky break through Leeds' bizarre obsession however he'll undoubtedly be in League 1 or lower in a few short years time.

Whilst it's not as poor as those early years under Toshak - it's an awfully poor crop of players.

Especially so when you consider we're not limited to those born in Wales and are happy to play those with very little affiliation to Wales.

I'm thankful England and China deemed Moore surplus to requirements and we were able to call him up. He's our star player these days.

The number of clean sheets a goalkeeper keeps is meaningless in terms of judging their level of performance.

He's a terrible goalkeeper, as has been evidenced this match. His indecision across multiple wayward crosses into the box has led to a number of excellent chances for us in the immediate second and third ball opportunities.

It's almost identical to what happened during those early months under Cooper where we kept multiple clean sheets. They were in spite of him, not because of him.

Watching Freddie Woodman stand rooted to his line as half a dozen crosses float past him which you would expect a Sunday League goalkeeper to collect is something I never thought I'd have to endure again.

How we haven't scored multiple goals this evening is perplexing.

This is a fantastic opportunity for Martinez to give many of Belgium's second string a chance to impress and secure a place in their World Cup squad whilst still maintaining a high chance of collecting all 3 points.

Let's hope we can steal another point and at least make a fight of not finishing bottom of our group.

Why is it a ludicrous statement?

He was the best player in arguably the greatest club team in football history.

It's a widely held viewpoint that he was robbed in the 1999 Balon d'Or vote.

He is absolutely one of the greatest football players of all time.

One of the greatest footballers of all time.

He deserved the Balloon d'Or. I cannot think of a more egregious result than Rivaldo winning ahead of Beckham in 1999.

Cabango would be fortunate to be playing League 2 football had we not taken an interest him.

Like many "home grown" players - the general perception of his ability his massively biased.

Cullen and Cabango should be no where near a 25 man squad at this level.

He should at the very least be playing every week in one of Europe's top five leagues.

I've argued for a long time that he'll end up playing for a team in Europe in the very near future.

He's the most talented goalkeeper I have seen play for us.

So many mediocre players have been able to use our club as a springboard, yet here we have a genuine "wonderkid" and we nearly lost him for free without ever giving him a chance. It's incredible.

Our 'legacy' is the League Cup win (which is hugely tainted by the actions of a ball boy during the semi final).

The only other event we'll be remembered for is being the lucky side honoured to have competed against Manchester United in Sir Alex's final home game.

Still, it's more than most small teams manage to achieve during their temporary stays in England's top division.

Their squad is an injury or two away from being one of the worst in the league.

The Premier League is so strong these days - it's incredible.

We had more possession, as is usual.

Yet the opposition managed to create twice as many dangerous attacks as us and attempt twice as many shots on goal.

It appears to be business as usual to me. Even down to the inability to sensibly see a game out. That wasn't their only big chance at the end of the match.

That theory is highly questionable when we know Cooper didn't rate the two American players that were brought in.

Similar has happened under Martin - it's highly unlikely he gave his blessing to the signing of Ogbeta.

Business as usual, is it not?

I expect we'll see a post in the coming days about a fresh zero tolerance approach to abuse on this forum, whilst those issuing it are free to continue posting.

You said you blamed Steve Cooper when replying to Japser's comment regarding a potential appearance based automatic extension clause in Bennett's contract.

That's why I asked if you believe the head coach handles contract negotiations.

Do you genuinely think Cooper and now Martin handle contract negotiations?

Have a quick scan of the post match thread.

Plenty bought back in after one result achieved primarily due to the opposition's nonsensical approach to playing against Martin's system. It was the same 70% possession nonsense, albeit Blackpool failed to set traps and let us play it out from the back at will.

We've played the same way since he dropped Benda early last season. Giving up on the triangles inside our penalty area after the first month of last season is the only significant change. Oh, and the hilarious formation change during pre season which was quickly abandoned after the reserve sides that lower league teams put out dismantled our first team.

Ages?

We won a game a few weeks ago and many on here and elsewhere did a 180 and restated buying into his nonsense again and begin deflecting blame at the owners.

You can be sure had we won today, there would be those of the belief that there is potential in this style of play.

Thankfully every member has performed poorly so far. It is still wide open.

I did not anticipate having to 'Wildcard' this early.

Cabango has been out of his depth at this level since before Martin arrived.

You're right that Martin has limited whatever potential he had left however.

Unfortunately for Ben he hasn't got the spatial awareness/ intelligence or whatever else you want to call it that is necessary for a centre back so lacking in agility and acceleration.

Hopefully we can get a fee for him and replace him with someone who improves the starting eleven.

Luton have attempted over 50% more attacks than us so far, despite having over 50% less of the ball.

It's farcial.
