Opposition corners

I wonder would Premier League teams try this with Arsenal? Arsenal might be so confident of a precise delivery that they would be happy to take the risk and have more up to rough the keeper up.

Good to see our Australian branch have the same approach to possession stats. Common culture!

Charlie Daniels in the dugout, you say? The devil went down to Watford.

I was going to ask where Julie ranks in the table of the Championship's longest-serving managers, but Watford sacking another one won't move him at all.

I agree on their goal, it was very cleverly worked by them. Bennie has got a lot of blame for it, including at the time from Edwards, but it was more complicated than just missing the extra wide man on an overload. Edwards followed a striker in from the outside, but Eccles actually then peeled away from the centre to a wide position to meet the cross. Bennie had tracked him but maybe thought he could hand him off to Dunne or Cook. Lessons learned, hopefully.

Not yesterday, though Crawley won again. Nice to see the comment from the Crawley fan below the BBC report praising Harrogate’s “outstanding” no. 23, our very own…

Obviously I howled for the penalty, but I thought the ref was pretty good yesterday. Get the game moving and didn’t seem to be guessing like some.

That was the least effective I’ve seen Rudoni against us. I don’t know if that’s down to Hayden or his own form (he hasn’t been in the team recently), but apart from the early header he hardly threatened us, which made a nice change.

He’s been terrific for us, the outstanding success of Ainsworth’s time here. (I realise he doesn’t play for nothing!)

I really didn’t want to go today after last week. My son was working and I offered our tickets to my daughter and her boyfriend but they weren’t free. Made a last minute decision to go and went with a stone in my stomach as they say. Oh boy oh boy. First half was very encouraging, we were well on top without being that threatening and the usual goal conceded after the break, but what a fight back. I was dreading the last ten minutes but compared to last week’s panic it was plain sailing. So proud of the team, unbelievable reward for us after the wretched anxiety of so much of the last three years.

Fair play to Julie, without Rumarn he’s had to think hard about how we had to change to be more potent going forward and the last two games have been a revelation in that area. Vale has made a massive difference and going with Bennie rather than Kolli was a bold call. And three up at their corners…where have you been all my life?

Nothing is more corrosive of respect for the law than its selective application, particularly when it’s motivated by revenue collection and the convenience of enforcement. Turning the police into a profit centre is a disastrous strategy for maintaining authority, as is belittling your armed forces. Who else is going to sustain you, your enemies?

Fortunately my selection of Navy Cut brought a swift end to my time as a smoker (two weeks!). Always fancied a spell in the navy but it put me right off.

My house in Kerry is at the end of a quarter mile boreen. There’s a primary school at the bottom just before the main road. One year I went back and the council had installed a 30 km/h sign at the turning, and about 100m up from the school, a brand new 80 km/h sign. Try as hard as I can, I’ve never got above 27 km/h before the road runs out.
