44 needed?

Try 48 at the very least.

We just need three or four other teams to go into administration and we'll have half a chance.

OT Of Mice and Men

I went to the Steinbeck museum in Salinas last month and it was fascinating. Obviously Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men are the ones that most know, but his entire life is a compelling story.

Is it time to start preparing for next season?

Also, I'm not suggesting I believe in any way, shape of form that the owners would plough £11m back into the club as a "gift", but that that would be the only way of getting a competitive budget for next season.

Otherwise, with the 60% wages to turnover limit, and our low ticket prices, the budget is likely to be in the bottom half of League One clubs next season, if not the bottom four.

In a strange sort of way, and I can't believe I'm saying this, I actually partly agree with BHOK.

Given the situation we are in, we need to more or less have the form of an 8th place side for the rest of the season. To get to that level, from where we are now, is a daunting prospect. And each game we don't win from here on in, makes that even more difficult and you can soon foresee a scenario in a couple of weeks, and certainly by January, that we will need play-off form or even automatic promotion form.

We're stymied in what we can do before January due to being full up with loans, so we effectively have to wait until then. At that point, we could be what...15(?), 20(?) points off safety? Let's be generous and say we've maintained the gap, or maybe even cut it to five points. Even then, it's going to be difficult to attract players in our position and with our facilities. Now, Karl is always clear on saying money is the only important factor to players and everything else is just PR fluff. To some extent, every person has their price, and if we flash the colour of our money, we would be able to sign players of the required quality to perhaps get us out of this mess.

However, that amount of money is likely to be waaaaaay above their market values and so we'd be held to ransom. This is precisely the WORST POSSIBLE TIME to try and go on a spending spree and we'll get very poor value for money. And, even if we do bring in the players by spending grotesque amounts to convince them to take on Mission: Impossible, there's still no guarantee it'll be enough to keep us up, as Karl is all too keen on reminding us regularly..."money doesn't equal success".

So, what am I getting at? I don't know completely, and throwing in the towel and giving up is hardly the attitude to endorse, but if the Oyston family are ever going to spend big on the playing side, and even in this predicament I can't see it, there couldn't be a worse time to do so. FFP in Leagues One and Two does allow "gifts" from owners to count towards revenue to help you get around the wages to turnover problem - so maybe that's the only good solution, twisted as it sounds? If (see: when) we go down, we get our £11m back as a "gift" from Zabaxe to allow us to have the most competitive League One budget and aim to bounce back.

Put simply, there's no good solution. But...I can see where BHOK is coming from.

This whole situation is, as they might say in Saving Private Ryan, FUBAR.

More knee-jerk reaction

Looking at it from the outside-in, that may well seem to be the case. However...

A friend of mine is a regular at Glanford Park (and on the road) and even in the midst of their run last season and post-promotion, Wilcox was getting criticism. The way they were playing was apparently dire and only due to the awful league they were playing in were they still picking up points. He felt that when moving up a division, the manager's failings would be woefully exposed and so it has proven.

FAO ODB - Gazette article in full ... thoughts?!
at 10:10 3 Oct 2014

Snippets of truth here and there, but spun so wildly as to be absolutely garbage.

I think it's a poor show he's been given a platform to spout this nonsense. The Gazette should be ashamed for printing it unchallenged.

Guardian Article

Wasn't the incident at Doncaster referred to as Buttygate? I seem to remember the story being that Karl refused to authorise a stop at a hotel and laying on sandwiches for the players, and as a result the late Mrs Hendry made a lasagna for them to eat on the coach. That was it, wasn't it?

Steve,

I should clearly copy their style of one sentence and a photo for each point. Would take me five minutes instead of 2-3 hours.

Wilf,

I remember your letter at the time and while I too was disappointed in the latter days of Holloway's reign, I was willing to excuse his behaviour given the amount of nonsense he'd been able to withstand. Everyone has their breaking point and we're now starting to see just how patient Holloway was. I think it's admirable that you feel so bold as to hold your hands up.

Ultimately, we've all been had over and it's only natural that people will realise it at different times. For me it was the moment the £11m became common knowledge, and many of those who poured scorn on me at the time for jumping to conclusions, and that "it was there to safeguard our legacy" have one by one come round to see the Oyston family for what they are.

Of course, a few still remain and that is their prerogative, but the stretch required to play devil's advocate seems more ridiculous by the day, in my humble opinion.

Thank you, very kind of you to say so.

However, like most of us, I've got no bloody clue. I know very little about a lot of these players and when most of them are unfit it makes it even more difficult. Just have to trust in the manager at this point, I'm not sure he can get much more out of them than what he is doing.

Let's face it, most of us expected some right hammerings by this point, and it's probably to his credit that we've kept the scorelines largely respectable.
