Bazunu is a rubbish keeper, so rubbish that if he hadn't done his Achilles, Saints would never have been promoted back to the PL last time.
Poor at reading the game, poor at cutting the angles and challenging the shooter, and poor footwork.
I don't care that he is, marginally, better than McCarthy with the ball at his feet. |

The problem with Bazunu on the goal was his footwork, not the bounce. The bounce only affects the keeper's judgement of how high it will be when it reaches him. Bazunu never got to the corner and the ball got past him. No point in a dive until it's going to get you where you need to be. He needed a lateral 'jump step' to his left before the dive, but he never does that, always diving from flat feet. He can't read the game and plays keeper like an outfield player who's never been coached. Since he has been coached, we can surmise that he is unable to learn. |

Re: McCarthy. If Bazunu were in the goal, they'd have shipped four in the first half. A keeper is not meant to catch close-range shots - he is meant to make himself big, take the angles away and block the shot. As for the first goal, Manning set up the perfect screen for the shooter and then ducked under the ball, Charles sat off him by yards, and Quarshie was backing in on his own goal.
On the second, McCarthy made the save and five Saints pylons watched the rebound be put away.
These guys can't defend and/or aren't playing for each other. |
