I can second that - in my youth I was a runner there (hence the pseudonym) and my old man was one of the Chief Stewards who worked alongside Dave Webber. The boys that walked through the steward room week in week out were the same faces, the same fans, who understood the frustrations of the average paying punter. The Thompson protests were always handled amicably from my memory. Goldrange eroded that over the course of several seasons, the stewards lost the School End, athe gates and then the Lower Loft if I remember right. By that time the writing was on the wall. Not for a second saying the old guard of stewards were perfect; but you're right Ewan, it worked well. But the sheen of professionalism that the Premier League demanded meant that it wasn't good enough, and an SIA license, black bomber jacket and a 'f*ck you' attitude was called for. Stories like this make me absolutely sick thinking about how it used to be there. |

Long time lurker sticking his head above the parapet here just because I saw mention of Greenford... I walk past that mystery building every day on my way to work. My Nan used to live directly opposite and my old man assured me it was an old electricity sub-station. And yeah the office building was Taylor Woodrow offices, used to have a sneaky 'urban exploration' when it was derelict when I was in sixth form with a few mates, to throw stones at windows and other such youthfully exuberant games... Good times. Good thread to reminisce in, cheers all! |
