Shaw comes to
Spotland with the intention of filling the gap left
behind by Glenn Murray. Whilst we've have a number of
highly prized assets up front, it's been clear that
we've missed a bit of height, with concerns that Dagnall
and Le Fondre are too similar in stature, and not making
a workable partnership as such.
His strengths seem
to be his all round game. He has a bit of height without
verging on the Sako stakes, he has good pace, very hard
working, can bring other players into the game and most
importantly of all, he knows where the back of the net
is. He grabbed 20 goals in 36 appearances for the
Shaymen in the Conference last season in what was a
struggling side.
He arrives at the
club with good pedigree. He may be making a step up to
League Football, but he has played at both Championship
and League One levels from his time with Sheffield
Wednesday, and he has been given solid backing from the
supporters of sides he played for in the Conference.
Furthermore, at the
end of the 2007-8 season, he was named as the best
player outside of the Football League by the Non League
Daily and credited single handedly for keeping the
Shaymen up last season. It was his form that earned him
this accolade and a call up for the England conference
side
His career began
signing for his hometown side Sheffield Wednesday as a
youngster, and the initial signs for Jon were very good.
He was given a number of opportunities in the Wednesday
first team after making his debut at 19, but it was not
to be and he moved on to non league Burton Albion.
He spent three
season's at Nigel Clough's Burton Albion, and it was
only having to play much of his final season there at
centre back which prevented him being top scorer in all
three seasons with the Brewers, as he had done in his
first two seasons.
Halifax boss Chris
Wilder shelled out for him at the start of the 2007-8
season, and he was pretty much the only success story
for the Shaymen during that season, as they slumped into
financial meltdown.
Faced with the
prospect of the Conference's best player becoming the
Northern Premier League's best player, Keith Hill
stepped in and picked up Shaw for what is believed to be
around £20,000.
