Scunthorpe United have decided that they do not wish to follow up their interest in Steve Watt

Scunthorpe had been interested in taking on the player who spent over two years at the Liberty but never came close to fulfilling the billing that he arrived with.

He spent last season on loan at Inverness but only managed one appearance for the Scottish side and was quickly shown the door this summer when Roberto started his clear out.

And Nigel Adkins almost immediately showed an interest in taking on the player once labelled "the new John Terry" but that has ended now with Watt without a club just seven weeks before the start of the new season

"There was some interest from Scunthorpe and we spoke to Nigel and the club" Watt's agent Glenn Corcoran confirmed to the Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph

"We went up and met Nigel, had a walk around the ground and said that we would be interesting in talking to the club if something was going to develop.

"But for whatever reason, and we don't know why, Scunthorpe have decided they aren't interested in pursuing it any further.

"Steve is young and comes from a good background in terms of starting his career at Chelsea. But he had some bad luck with injuries at Swansea and broke his collarbone twice.

"There's been quite a lot of interest, the down side for Steve is that he hasn't played a lot of games.

"But he's still only 23 and still has a real opportunity. He is a really good player and a very capable centre-back.

"In Scunthorpe's eyes, maybe they felt the fact that he's not played was potentially a reason they couldn't pursue it."
