Rogers comes
Rogers comes "out" then walks away
Friday, 15th Feb 2013 18:19

Former Leeds United winger Robbie Rogers has announced he is quitting football having revealed he is gay.

Rogers, just 25 agreed to cancel his contract with Leeds United last month having spent the season on loan at Stevenage.

His next move was not entirely clear, but earlier today he revealed tat he is gay and plans to retire from football.

Described as "football's last taboo" by ex Crystal Palace boss Alan Smith, Rogers is on,y the SECOND footballer I am aware of who has "come out" the last being the tragic Justin Fashanu in 1990 who took his own life eight years later?

Rogers played four times for Leeds having been signed from Columbus Crew in 2011.

Whilst I have every respect for Robbie's revelation, there is an element of sadness if he feels unable to carry on in the so-called macho-world of football as a gay player, the fear of what other people may think and the inevitable abuse he would get may have influenced his decision?

Most right-minded Leeds supporters would hope we have moved on from the dark days but watching the SSN documentary about the Millwall Neanderthals abusing Dioufy shows is that we are far from perfect as a society.
