Where are the goals coming from?

Five games and two goals. Against Forest we had 1 shot on target, against Shrewsbury 3, Blackburn 4, Brentford 5 and Wigan 1. 14 shots on target in 450 minutes of football - effectively a shot every half an hour. Whilst we have conceded 8 goals in those same 5 games, it is surely going forward that Jose Riga must devote his week off to.

Last season we had a real hotch potch of forwards. From Andy Keogh to Stephen Dobbie to Steven Davies to Ricardo Fuller to Louis Almond and none of them achieved very much! Compare that to Jordan Rhodes goals at Blackburn - a poor side in an average Championship who nearly snook in to the Play Offs. It was obvious from the stats with Tom Ince being our most prolific goal scorer, having only played for half the season, that when we had the big clear out that we had to replenish our strike force with players who weren't firing blanks.

The players who Riga has brought in have hardly set the pitch alight in the penalty box, although if we go further down the field they've hardly had much service. When Sergei Zenjov broke in to the Wigan box in the first half on Saturday it was like we'd entered unchartered territory. Similarly last Tuesday we saw the ball flash along the goal line and no one was there to knock it in. When our midfield do push the ball forward it's such a rarity that our strikers have forgotten where they should be. We have seen from Delfouenso and Cwyka that they have the ability to get down the wings and yet we seem to be playing a very narrow game and our strikers seem afraid of leading a high line.

Zoko has been the biggest disappointment up front, but maybe that's what happens when you buy a released League One striker. Miller clearly isn't fit - scandalous for a footballer at the end of August - however you can see the potential, whilst our biggest threat seems to be Ranger and yet we've hardly given him a chance. What we lack is that nippy, strong, annoying striker who causes defences problems. If they could clone a Billy Sharp type character we'd be the first in the queue. Whether Riga has someone in mind remains to be seen but he will only start to solve Blackpool's problems once we find that goal scoring striker. In turn that might involve prising the Oyston's wallet open and good luck to him with that!
