Saints On Threshold If They Beat Arsenal Wednesday, 31st Dec 2014 10:38 Saints have the opportunity to stand on the threshold of achieving something fantastic in English football if they beat Arsenal. Of course there will still be a long way to go in the season whatever the result in the game at St Mary's on New Years Day, however if Saints do triumph it could signal the dawning of a new era in English football and it could be Southampton Football Club leading the way. This season has been somewhat different in the Premier League in that Saints along with other unfashionable clubs like West Ham and Swansea have been challenging at the top end of the League rather than just swimming around in the middle as they are expected to do, with the elite clubs ruling the roost. But something has changed this season, perhaps the beginnings were last season when Manchester United dropped so alarmingly, but this term there is that smell of something different, that money cant buy everything. So if Saints can beat Arsenal it will send out a big message to the world of football, not to mention sending them three points clear of the Gunners in fifth place, if of course they are still there and haven't been overtaken by West Ham who take on West Brom at Upton Park. So if Saints can beat Arsenal it will send out a big statement of intent and perhaps give hope to football fans everywhere who are sick of the Premier league being monopolised by a handful of clubs who think they can do what they want when they want and who think they have a god given right to Champions League qualification, perhaps it can be Saints who show the way forward to the downtrodden rest of the League and show that they can be beaten and football is returning to the days when it was about a manager building a squad through skill and knowledge and not just because he has the biggest bankroll and money is no object. It will never be a level playing field, but perhaps again the minnows can take on the giants.
