Pompey trio get a special mention... one in one out at Fratton

Paul Cook is normally careful not to single out individual players for praise after games - but he couldn't help but mention the impact of three of his stars after Pompey saw off Blackpool.

The manager cited the involvement of Kyle Bennett, Gary Roberts and Eoin Doyle after Gary Bowyer's visitors were beaten 2-0 to give the Blues their second home victory in four days.

Cook told the club website: 'I thought Kyle Bennett and Gary Roberts were excellent — they were both absolutely terrific. You saw what Eoin gives us — it’s not just about the goals, but his all-round play and intelligence. He’s a really top player.

'Everything we did was good and everything about us was strong. I really enjoyed watching us play. If you’re going to be passing team then you have to be brave with the ball and our lads deserve all the plaudits.

'Blackpool stretched us in the second half and put us under pressure, but we did really well in the first and controlled the game. We always looked a threat on the break and defended solidly, so it was a great night for us overall.

'It was lovely to see the ground rocking like that. It’s a special atmosphere under the lights and the fans were fantastic.' til Pompey have had a setback since the Seasiders were beaten - coach Ian Foster has left to take up a job with the England set-up at the FA's St George's Park.

Foster joined Pompey when Cook and Leam Richardson arrived in the 2015 close season.

There is no news yet on a replacement for Foster - but as he left, a new player joined Cook's squad. Stanley Aborah, 29, formerly with Notts County, has joined until the end of the season.

The News reported that the Ajax academy graduate has played in countries such as Belgium, Slovakia, Slovenia and Kuwait in a well-travelled life in the game.
