Ipswich eye Delaney, Rose speaks after signing contract – evening news
Ipswich eye Delaney, Rose speaks after signing contract – evening news

Left back Damien Delaney is a summer transfer target for Championship side Ipswich Town, youngster Romone Rose has been speaking after signing a new two year contract and Liam Miller is an unlikely target for Hull City.

Delaney signed for QPR from Hull City for a fee in the region of £600k in January 2008 and enjoyed a tremendous start to life at Loftus Road under manager Luigi De Canio. With the Italian encouraging his full backs to fly forward and join the attack Delaney excelled but he suffered under the more regimented regime of first Iain Dowie and then Paulo Sousa and, in truth, has had a mediocre campaign at best.

Delaney gave up his place to Matt Connolly in the closing weeks of the season but returned for the final day defeat at Preston. The Ealing Gazette reported earlier this close season that the Irishman, who blames a summer spent away with his national side for a below par campaign this season, could be a surprise departure from Loftus Road this season and LFW understands that Ipswich Town are keen to secure his signature. Town are now under the management of Delaney’s fellow Irishman Roy Keane and have only Ben Thatcher available at left back following Dan Harding’s release. Ipswich coach Tony Loughlan will know Delaney from their time together at Leicester and Delaney has been linked with a Portman Road move before. The player spoke of his admiration for Keane at a recent fans' forum at Loftus Road.

QPR would be looking to recoup the money they spent 18 months ago and with Marcus Evans financing things in Suffolk that shouldn’t be a problem, it remains to be seen though whether Keane rates him highly enough to splash out the £600k Rangers are looking for.

Elsewhere teenager Romone Rose has been talking about his time at QPR after extending his current contract by two years. Rose told the club’s official website:“I've got great confidence in my own ability and it will be a fresh start for everyone when the new manager comes in. I like to play as an out-and-out front man, but I can play wide too. I'm happy just to play wherever I'm picked though, although I think my pace and directness is at its best when I play through the middle."

Striker Rowan Vine has been looking ahead to next season on the club’s official website. Vine said: “We've been saying big things are going to happen here for long enough, now it's time for us to do it. Last season was a disappointment in my eyes. You can point to the fact that we finished higher than we did the previous year, but I still don't think that's good enough. We lacked consistency last season. We had a patch where we did well, but we drew too many games, and that cost us. Our play-off hopes were dashed by the games when we only took a point from when we were winning. That happened too often.

“We need to have the character to go on an unbeaten run. Too many times we were found wanting last season. Next season we've got to have a big go at it, and if we fail to finish in that top six, then it would be a massive disaster.”

Gareth Ainsworth has been talking to the Ealing Gazette about his recent forte for caretaker management. He said: “I'm sort of in love with QPR and I want the best for the club, the fans and the board, so whatever I have to do to help steady the ship, be it caretaker manager or playing in the reserves, I'm happy to do. I've had ten clubs in my career, so people have seen me as a journeyman. But if you look at the last eight years, there's only been one club on my CV."

According to today’s Daily Star Liam Miller, released by QPR at the end of the season, is a target for Premiership side Hull City. I assume that’s up to the standard of the usual Daily Star stories because if he can play in the Premiership then so can I. The rumour mill also links Jim Magilton, widely seen as the favourite to replace Paulo Sousa, to the vacant manager post at SPL outfit Aberdeen.

In former QPR news Ian Holloway has been settling in at Blackpool by smoothing troubled waters with Ian Evatt – Holloway signed Evatt for QPR but transfer listed him within six months. Holloway told the Blackpool Gazette "There are no problems between me and Ian – he is a fantastic lad. He has done fantastically for Blackpool and I can't wait to work with him again. But Ian knows the way I am with players. What I said to Ian back in our days at QPR together was that it was a mistake for the chairman to run off and get him because he was on our list and we were going to talk about him. I said to the owner (Gianni Paladini) I'm going on holiday for a week, a little break. Two days later he's on the phone shouting that he's got Ian Evatt. I just thought 'what is going on?' We had signed him without even giving the player a medical and you can't run a football club like that.

"So I said to Ian 'hang on a minute this is what happened. In hindsight, if I could go back, I wouldn't have told Ian that. He didn't need to know that. It was my frustration with the board and I didn't need to be that upfront with him. I think it affected the kid. But at the time the defence wasn't my top priority. I had Clarke Carlisle and Danny Shittu and what I was looking to do was buy a striker to add to the ones I already had. I think that QPR team would have done something if we had done that. So I wanted to get that right and unfortunately Ian was caught in that drama."

Meanwhile Michael Mancienne and Martin Cranie, who both enjoyed successful loans with QPR, have been included in the England Under 21 squad for this summer’s European Championships. Matthew Connolly’s continued absence from that squad mystifies me. Kevin Gallen will play non-league football for the first time in his career next season after agreeing a one year deal with Luton Town. Tony Roberts has agreed a one year contract extension at Dagenham at Redbridge.

Elsewhere in the Championship today Southampton have confirmed that they are unable to pay wages for May as administrators continue to search for a buyer, Norwich have released Lee Croft following their relegation and Swansea have issued a hands off warning to Wigan who are said to want Roberto Martinez to replace Steve Bruce if he goes to Sunderland. Martinez played for Wigan for six years and is close friends with chairman Dave Whelen but has previously said he would stay at Swansea as long as they want him. Time will tell.
