This was surely a game where the final result cannot be blamed on Mark Hughes....or ? I've seen some terrible refereeing decisions over the past six decades but this is surely one of the worst to affect Saints in such a manner as it did. As many have pointed out, Yoshida (though in an offside position) isn't interfering with play, or obscuring the goalie's view... nor does he touch the ball. No one appeals against the goal and the Watford players return to the centre without objection.....Why on Earth does the ref. look for a way to disallow it?. I don't know what it did for the players but it certainly took some enthusiasm from me. As for the game.. yes maybe Watford should have had a penalty for Bertrand's clumsy challenge (he also got his 5th yellow of the season BTW)..but I'm sick of hearing people claim that a penalty should be thought of almost "automatically counted as a goal they ought to have had" . Lots of penalties are missed, or saved by the keeper. Charlie's Austin's outburst, though understandably justified, will probably get him a fine, (hopefully not a suspension)... as it wasn't violent play... but it puts us in a plight with both Long and Ings now on the injury list. I won't conjecture any further (as yet unseen problems) but the next few months will show just how good the club structure is, and how we can overcome the mounting problems. Taking time out to sack MH at this stage would be almost suicidal, and any "incoming manager" would need a month to remember everyone's name, let alone galvanise the team with new tactics that may be unfamiliar to everyone. | |
