Southampton Interested In Bournemouth Defender
Friday, 14th Jun 2024 09:04

A year ago Saints were interested in signing Max Aarons from Norwich City a year ago, but after being relegated, they were never going to be much of an attraction to the player and he went to Bournemouth.

With the possibility that Kyle Walker Peters might have left the club in the summer of 2023 after Southampton's relegation from the Premier League, the club looked at options and one that they were very interested in was Max Aarons.

With his contract at Carrow Road ending in the summer of 2023 although his valuation was somewhere between £15 -18 Million, he came to Dorset for just £7 million plus addons that would put another £4-5 million, that was because Norwich were entitled to a development fee as he was under 24.

He started his time well at the Vitality Stadium, he was in the starting line up 11 times out of the first 13 games until a hamstring injury interrupted his season in November, although he would make a brief comeback, he was essentially out until March and on his return for the last 10 games of the season , he struggled to get back in the side.

This has led to speculation that he might be surplus to requirements and according to The Daily Echo Saints are reviving their interest in a player they were pursuing a year ago.

Aarons is primarily a right back and that leads to speculation that Kyle Walker Peters could be leaving the club with rumours suggesting that Tottenham Hotspur could be after him.

But just because Aarons is a right back doesn't mean that KWP is on his way out, he can also play left back and the modern game seems to like right footed players on the left and vice versa as it enables them to cut inside and shoot with their best foot.

Aarons can also play on the left, so if he did sign Saints would have good options on both sides of the defence and the ability to switch each one over when the situation demanded it.

Aarons who is 24 has good experience, at Norwich he played 201 League games for the club in the 5 seasons he was in the first team, two of those seasons were in the Premier League, so his 70 appearances in the top flight when added to the 20 he made for Bournemouth last season, mean Saints would be buying a very experienced player should they make their move.

Don’t you find it amazing that so many deals are being announced as being completed when we are still in June, not yet July 1st, and outside the transfer window? Are you expecting clubs such as West Ham and Newcastle who announced signings yesterday to be docked points for breaching Premier League rules? Or do you now take on board the existence of post-dated contracts?

This is typical during the summer break and some of these " deals " are either generated by agents looking to create interest in their clients, or on a site run by some kid who has a PC in his bedroom and thinks he's I.N.K and wants deals for his favourite players. Fake News !

So far I've noted around 20 ( yes twenty) names listed on various sites and the window doesn't even open till Friday. Personally, I'll wait till I see the interview after the player has signed his contract at Staplewood.

This kid was very highly rated 2 - 3 years ago, seems to have lost his way a little. Pretty sure whenever i saw him play it was at LB, which we need so would be a good signing imho.

Signing a full back who can play both sides of the pitch is a bonus (see KWP) and it maybe no coincidence that he previously played for Norwich and is known to Russell Martin.
Every manager has his favourites and maybe his face didn't fit at B'mouth, after changes of management, or playing style. At the moment Saints may be a more attractive as the Cherries seemed to have gone off the boil a bit and have now lost Kelly, and will likely have to sell best striker. Perhaps if he tosses the coin again, he may make a different call?.
