Sadly not Wayne Rooney after a falling out with Sir Alex Ferguson, but his younger brother John who has alledgedly turned down a new contract with current club Macclesfield Town and is rumoured to be training with a league 1 side.

Rooney who will be 20 in December has made 25 league starts plus 16 sub appearance for the Silkmen scoring three times in the process and has been linked with Saints last season when Derby County were also interested.

It was Nigel Clough who looked keen to offer the younger Rooney a chance on a higher stage, but after a week on trial he decided against offering him a contract at Pride Park.

In truth this would be the type odf striker Saints would be looking for to provide back up for Lambert, Barnard & Connolly, with those three already on the books it would be hard to attract a truly first choice striker to the club, not to mention the extra wages, so a player in the mould of Rooney would be the ideal target, someone who can be brought in fairly cheaply, has a little experience and is hungry for more.

Rooney has yet to make a real impression at Macc Town, but he has promise and in the absence of anyone coming in from our own youth set up for a year or tow we have to look elsewhere, it might not be Rooney that comes into Saints, but it will be someone of his ilk, yes Saints could look to a Premier or Championship Club, as they have done in the past for a loanee, but these clubs want their players playing games and with the front three we have Saints cannot offer that, therefore it will be potential that they will be looking for and someone who is prepared to watch, listen and take their chance when it comes.
