Although I'm not religious, I want to buy a copy of the Bible, but there seem to be plenty of different versions around - any recommendations which is best? Apparently more people still go to church on Sundays than go to football matches on Saturdays, so I'm hoping someone here does both and can recommend one.

Although why any sane individual would base their life on a collection of folk stories told arond the campfire by middle eastern goatherders goes beyond my comprehension ( see also the Koran and the Torah).

And Daniel Dennett, the fourth horseman. I like to think of myself as the fifth, but I don't do enough proselytising (though friends and family would argue against this view)

Good question. Because a lot of our culture and our history is based on it, I guess. As one example, if Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah is based on the story of King David then I'd like to go back and read the source material.
I read history books even though I'm not a time traveller, and for good or evil it's an important book - there's plenty of room for it on my bookshelf once I get Dr Winston's copies of Razzle out of the way.

I understand the interest actually. Many of us mock it, but how many have actually read it (don't answer that - I suspect many have because we were brunged up in a Christian society, but likely that just as many haven't)? You can't argue it not a significant piece of literature, so what's wrong with someone reading it even if someone isn't a believer?
