Interestingly I was reading about accents a while ago - on a NZ ;page talking about how the NZ accent developed from a "colonial Twang" noted in NZ herald in about 1900 or so, a time when NZ was still very wedded to the idea of being British and the Mother Country and suchlike. Also they discovered some early recordings of people in the First World War and noted how different villages could sound from just a few miles, a particular village in Oxfordshire had a chap saying something that sounded like "Feerther" - Father. The west of London thing is a good case in point, as I say Berkshire is interesting with the East/West differences, go to Hungerford and the west of Reading and you'll hear alot more of the old Western style Buur - heading East to Bracknell, Maidenhead and Slough etc it's far more your "London. Reading itself depends but Tilehurst you can detect a bur of sorts, especially on certain words. Basingstoke is similar with the old London, but again a bit further out into Hampshire it changes a bit unless you've got your neutral Posh types - not very many truly do RP anymore I don't think. | |
