| Arsenal friendly on 22:13 - Sep 1 by BrianMcCarthy | Are you saying Amos was playing on the left-wing/left side of md-field Brian? - not sure, just going on the traditional way of naming team line-ups. Would he not be more likely be on the right and BOS on the left? I think BOS is better on the right and Amos and Chair are both better central, for the little that's worth :) And has BOS signed a contract so he is 'eligible' to play? I wouldn't take Warburton's comment as literally as that just yet. We know Manning and BOS haven't signed contracts or we'd be told. I think they'll play for now but there may come a time soon where they'll be told "sign or leave". Carroll and Cameron holding - not very confidence inspiring. Ball is clearly first choice among our anchors, Bettache showing promise. We have other options. I'm intrigued by Carroll as well. He was 21 years old and had 68 appearances when he came to us seven years ago. Since then, he's played a lot of football in this division and the one above. If he's fit, free and hungry then he may be an interesting addition. I' not buying or selling the idea, but I'm open to it. |
Brian, from what I’ve seen, this pre-season and last season, it’s far more likely Amos is playing in the middle and Chair on the left. I don’t like Chair out there, but he did end up out there a lot last season, especially when Eze was on the pitch too. They often rotated. I think Chair is perfectly suited to the no. 10 role or slightly deeper central attacking midfielder. I don’t think Amos has played on the left at all in any game though. I’d be amazed if he’s playing on the left.

Agree with all of that Hunter. I'd be amazed too, hence my question mark in the original post. Sorry of I wasn't clear.

Ah, sorry, Brian. Misunderstood. I’ll be disappointed if Chair is shoved out wide. He’ll be wasted out there. His touch, close control, tidy passing and shooting will be more beneficial in the middle. We need pace out wide, not players wanting to cut in onto their right foot, to get to the byline and cross for Big Lyndon or make diagonal runs in behind the full back and centre half for Chair to slide it through to....Like Routledge and Ephraim back in the day, Chair as Adel and Lyndon as Helguson. Obviously that’s all a B team equivalent, but it’s more the Ball for Derry and Amos for Faurlin deal that worries me!

I agree re Chair. Another worry with Chair cutting in from the left onto his right is that he's often trying low-percentage shots from long range and out wide. We've seen that he has that skill in abundance but I think it would be better exploited if he was shooting from central and closer positions. At the moment it could be argued that that particular skill of his is being wasted and that his usage of it from the left is also wasting Rangers' attacks.

I agree that Chair played a good deal on the left last season. Especially between Christmas and lockdown when he was being rotated with Pugh. Definitely not his best position. 'If' we keep BOS, I'd like to see him on the left as I think he is really effective there (Birmingham/Cardiff), Chair at 10, with Thomas/Smyth on the right. Trouble with that is it leaves us really lightweight in the centre

Agree with all of that. With Eze gone I think we need a creative force and goalscorer in the middle and am hopeful Chair can do that. I don't see Amos being anything like as effective. I think Chair will have less influence on the wing and we have other options there even if BOS goes. Would really like Ben Watson in centre mid to beef it up a bit - I'm not against Carroll and would actually quite like to see him do well for us as I don't think we saw the best of him, but he isn't that player that we need.
| Arsenal friendly on 23:29 - Sep 1 with 1278 views | BrianMcCarthy | The only counterpoint to picking Chair in the centre, and it's one worth considering by all of us including me, is that he might find more space in wide positions. Just something I'm turning over in my mind - is he ready right now to control the team from a central position and to bring his game to bear in the tighter spaces? Or should we swap him in and out for another between 10 and 11 while he learns the trade? | |

| Arsenal friendly on 11:41 - Sep 2 with 727 views | Esox_Lucius | People are still persisting with the notion that Chair is a natural replacement for Ebere, he isn't. He's a different type of player altogether. Bettache is nearer to being that player, or Bansal-McNulty when his time comes. | |
