| #Letfansin on 23:55 - Oct 6 by Hunterhoop | The ship has sailed. The train has left the station. It’s too late. If they’d held the full lockdown for longer and quarantined all incoming travellers for 14 days, perhaps they could have contained and eradicated the virus. If they’d had a robust testing, track and trace system in place for when they relaxed lockdown in July, perhaps they could have contained and eradicated the virus. But now? It’s too late. All that will happen with the current approach is that it will still go through the country, just over a longer period of time, bringing with it all the economic impact, mental health impact, along with all the other negative ramifications for other health conditions. This is a PR led approach. Not a health one. |
Totally this. We can't shut this country down indefinitely. We needed to slow down transmission to allow health services to cope. We also needed to get protective measures in place for people who run services, like transport and shops, with social distancing and protective measures. But realistically people are getting the illness anyway. Most of the students I now have had it now, so it must be spreading through young people like wildfire. The vaccine is still some way off and we don't seem to be able to eradicate whatever measures are taken. The football thing seems like a PR issue. They might be criticised more for a group of people getting it from a football match than from, say, going to the local odeon. But it's as important to them as the cinema is to film buffs (I need both). Provided we do the measures outlined by the club, including sensible distancing, wearing masks etc, I think it should go ahead.

All this social and economic upheaval for a flu virus with a minuscule mortality rate. Nearly a year after this all kicked off globally, I'm still quite astounded. Crazy world.
