My brother was, years ago, at Wycombe. He knew about Joe Cole (remember him?) when he was 12. |
We're not so good at it apparently, given the number that leave us compared to those that come the other way. Those that do come to us seem to have been released rather than poached.

Nix, am i right in thinking that our young talents are going to better academies? Or are we just losing them to other academies of the same level? I would have thought with the pathways available that those that in the past would have left would now be staying? | | | |

I don't know about the younger players who've left as it's difficult to find info on it and I've got no insider news but just looking at a couple of players that there is some stuff in the public domain:
Josh Laurent was in the academy in the noughties but left in 2012 because he couldn't see a pathway into the first team and went to Brentford. He's recently played for Reading and now Stoke and was Reading's player of the season two seasons ago. So someone who is definitely Championship quality that slipped through the net.
Josh Bowler, obviously went to Everton, so bigger academy.
Jordan Zemura now at Bournemouth used to be at QPR youth set up but we released him at ten years old.
Harvey Elliot left us for Fulham Academy
So we did lose players to academies with teams at the same level (Fulham and Brentford both were I think at the time).
What I do think has improved is our pathway to the first team, the involvement of our first team manager with the youth players and the fact they are all on the same site. I'm hoping that will increase our ability to attract the better young players going forward. | | | |

I posted last month Dom Balls comment in his book about his trial at QPR when he 15 and how bad the facilities were and that being the reason he wouldn't sign for us. However, with the new facilities, pathway to the first team and now challenging at the right end of the table I imagine we are now a more attractive proposition. | |
