Although signed for the academy he has played senior football and at 18 has a chance to make appearances for the senior team.

Swansea have targeted quite a few promising free agent players from London and Manchester clubs. Some are still in the system and making progress. Few if any have hit the big time. Rio Campbell Adrian Akande David Roberts, Tarelle Whitaker came and went along with a few others.
Lissah looks like a good prospect, Charlie Veevers got a new deal but none yet in the first XI. Azzeem Abdullai should make a breakthrough this season.
It makes sense to pick a player not able to progress through technical defects and spend time ironing those defects out. An intelligent determined player can do it. A less intelligent player focusing on cash and off filed activities will struggle.

If we are signing released players no better than our own - and none have yet made our first team then ….. whats the point ?
Mostly our coaches will not have seen much of these players.
So its just a hope.
Better off working harder with our own boys, shirley.

Football academies are like the gold mining business. One big nugget makes it all worthwhile. This is what you do no understand fully perhaps?

Need 11 on a football pitch. A lot of our recruitment has been aimed at building squads to play with our brightest talents. When we have goalkeepers, midfielders and a few strikers, most of what we bring in will be defenders and wingers. It would be nice to think we could source a competitive side at u18s and u21s level entirely with local products by just grafting more, but realistically there's always going to be missing positions/types and you start having to give contracts to lads who are far below standard. Then our best prospects suffer and start eyeing up stronger environments.
A few have come in because they were seen as too good not to take the opportunity despite playing a well-stocked position (aforementioned Veevers who was guaranteed a pro contract to lure him in) but most of this sort of recruitment is targeted gap-filling. The highly-rated players rarely go free, and the ones that do tend to have issues that make their progression less likely. If they stay for 1 or 2 years and help the team, then the low odds of progressing at the club are secondary.
The demand that every team play Russell Martin's favourite formation hampered many of the recent signings. Imagine leaving your club because they didn't use wingers, having a great time on trial playing on the wing, then a few weeks after signing on your new club decides it's not using wingers either (until that manager leaves less than two years later, what a great idea to reshape the whole academy for him. Both under 18s and under 21s have improved their standing in the professional leagues significantly in the last two seasons. | |
